The Storm King Golf Club celebrated its 125th anniversary on Friday, Nov. 15 with a party in the Storm King Tavern dining room. Club owners Adrian and Donna Goddard were among the crowd that toasted the occasion.

Brendan Murcko, the clubhouse pro spoke briefly before dinner — welcoming members and guests, and inviting them to sign up for next year. He also introduced Pat Harding, who has been a part of the club for almost half of its long history. Mr. Harding joined Storm King in 1966 and has been an active participant for 54 years. On Friday night, he received a long and loud ovation from his friends and fellow golfers.

Willie Norton, a golf pro from Scotland, designed the course in 1894. Almost three decades later, in 1923, the late James Stillman bequeathed the property to the members, with the stipulation that it continue as a golf course.

Storm King experienced financial problems after the construction of its clubhouse, and was on the verge of closing when it was purchased by Adrian and Donna Goddard in 2016. Since then, the course has been open to both members and outsiders. The traditional tournaments have continued. The club championship is held in July and the Member-Member Tournament is a tradition on Labor Day weekend. The Cornwall golf team uses Storm King as its home course.

The clubhouse, also known as the “Storm King Tavern,” has been a popular location for parties, meetings, and folks who want to have dinner in a friendly atmosphere. Daytime diners are sure to be impressed with the view.

It was dark by the time, the anniversary party started. But guests could enjoy a display of antique golf clubs along with a picture board replete with historic photos.

The club expects to bury a time capsule in the spring.
