Santos and Bell lead Dragon skiers
Olivia Santos and Mitchell Bell have been the most successful Cornwall skiers this season. Olivia has finished fourth or fifth in every race. Mitchell has posted the fastest times for the boys team. The Dragons had two meets last week.

Swimmers edge FDR in unusual meet
Roosevelt swimmers finished first in 8 out of 11 events last week, but the Dragons still won the meet.
The Dutchess County school has a small squad. So while the Presidents won races on Jan. 19, the Dragons piled up points with seconds and thirds
Going into the last race of the day, the 400-yard freestyle relay, the score was tied. The visiting Dragons broke the deadlock with a decisive win in the relay, where the foursome of Gagnon, Galeano, Weiss and Luhrs finished more than a lap ahead of their opponents.
The victory over FDR followed a loss at Arlington. Despite the final score, it was a good day for Sean Jessup who lowered his time for the 200 freestyle by five seconds.
Cornwall has a 6-5 record for the season. Ciaran O’Gorman was out of action last week, but still leads the team in victories.

Wrestlers assured of winning record
The Dragons defeated Port Jervis 46-24 on Jan. 18, and then won three out of five matches at the Wallkill Duals on Jan. 21. That gives the mat men a 14-10 record, and guarantees that they’ll finish the season with more wins than losses — something the Dragons have done for 34 straight years.

Christian Prokosch (99 pounds), Steve Gazzillo (145) and Will Leonard (182) were undefeated for the day. The Dragons will host Monticello at 7 p.m. on Feb. 1 in the final match of the regular season.

Hoops girls down two league rivals
A few Goshen players were out sick when the Gladiators came to Cornwall on Jan. 17. The visitors played tough without them.
Cornwall’s lead was mired at seven until the waning moments of the first half. Then the Lady Dragons erupted for seven quick points. Jess Barbier nailed a three, and Maggie Malone followed with a pair of lay-ups that were just seconds apart. She scored, stole the ball in the backcourt, and scored again on an identical shot.
The outburst set the tone for the second half, with the home team pulling away for a 60-32 victory. Maggie led her teammates with 28 points, her high total for the season. Maddie Vinett added 15.
Three days later, Cornwall downed another league rival, as it outscored visiting Monticello 62-19. The girls have a 2-0 record in their league, and 9-3 overall.

Boys fall to Goshen in basketball
The Dragons overcame a slow start to take a third quarter lead in their Jan. 20 game at Goshen. But the Gladiators turned the tables in the final period for a 58-46 win.
The Dragons fell behind quickly. They were trailing 11-3 when Erik Fosstveit nailed a three-pointer and Joey Lynch scored on a backdoor pass from Tyler Alemany.
The baskets proved to be a turning point, as Cornwall trailed by just a point at the half and surged to an eight point lead after the intermission. But the Dragons’ advantage evaporated in the closing minutes of the third period.
With the teams virtually even, Goshen sank three shots from behind the arc in the final quarter, and then padded its lead with some near perfect shooting from the free throw line.
“It was a high energy atmosphere,” Cornwall Coach Tom Howe said. “We demonstrated our improvement and came away with a lot of positives.” The Dragons have a 1-1 record in league play (2-9 overall), and are still in contention for a playoff berth.

Youth sports
St. Thomas Seventh Grade Boys won a road game at St Mary’s of Washingtonville 50-35. The team, which is 6-0 for the season, got 11 points from Derek Marrero, and eight each from Johnny Germain, Gregory Shaw,III, and Aidan Semo.
Softball clinic: Varsity Coaches Kelsey Hand and Eric Holzapple, along with the their players, are running a free clinic for 8 to 14-year-old girls in the Willow Avenue gym.
The hour-long clinic starts at 6 p.m. It focuses on pitching on Mondays and on hitting and fielding on Wednesdays.
