A sink hole discovered on the Cornwall-on-Hudson side of Route 218 will keep the Storm King Mountain road closed until the end of April.

Two weeks ago the New York State Department of Transportation (DOT) closed Route 218, between Cornwall-on-Hudson and the Town of Highlands, due to a sink hole that formed around an old culvert.

The sink hole, located on the southbound lane, just beyond the Cornwall-on-Hudson gate, is five feet long, two feet wide, and about five feet deep.

Some motorists choose to traverse Storm King Mountain by way of Route 218 in order to avoid the speed racers on Route 9W. The scenic byway is traditionally closed in the winter due to weather related conditions, but drivers will have to wait another month for it to re-open.

The DOT is devising a repair schedule, but details of the work have not been finalized.

Gina DiSarro, a spokeswoman for the DOT, said only the one location will be addressed. She said determining other locations where sink holes may develop is difficult due to the way the road was originally constructed.

DiSarro said that because of Route 218’s uniqueness. crews are constantly watching the road for potential safety hazards.
