Nicholas H. Balison

July 21, 1927 – September 15, 2015

Nicholas Balison, husband of Dorothy Balison, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday Sept. 15 at their home in Venice Fla. He was 88-years old and a former resident of Cornwall. Born July 21, 1927 in Jersey City, N.J., he was the son of the late Paul and Augustina Balison.

Nick served in the U.S. Navy during World Wat II and later worked for Lederle Laboratories in Pearl River N.Y., and Orion Corp., He started Lindsey Water Conditioning after moving to Cornwall in 1970. Nick loved to play the piano, was a private pilot for many years and an accomplished golfer. He is survived by his loving wife Dorothy of 65 years, his sister Grace Mowat of Pearl River and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son Richard.

Services will be held at the Sarasota National Cemetery on Nov. 20. Donations in Nick’s name can be made to Tidewell Hospice, 5955 Rand Blvd, Sarasota, FL 34238.

Helen T. Castellano

December 14, 1926-October 7, 2015

Helen T. Castellano, age 88 of Boynton Beach, Fla. passed away peacefully on Oct. 7.

Helen was born Dec.14, 1926 in Peekskill, N.Y. to Genaro DeChristopher and Clementina Laudati.  She is the last of thirteen siblings and was preceded in death by her dear husband, Col. Anthony “Ace” Castellano and beloved daughter, Christine Ann Castellano.  She is survived by numerous members of the DeChristopher family and her extended family of DeJuan, Philip, Ian and Christine Cork.

Helen graduated from Peekskill High in 1944 and Fordham School of Nursing in 1948.  She worked for Doctors Hospital, NYC and Peekskill Hospital, before coming to New York Military Academy (NYMA) as Head Nurse in 1951, where she met the love of her life, Ace.  They were married that same year and their daughter Christine was born the following year.

Helen worked at NYMA for 22 years before retiring in 1986.  She was loved by the faculty and students.  In 2013, she received an award for service dedicated to “The Mother of the Corp” from the thousands of her sons and daughters who attended NYMA.

Helen and Ace retired to Boynton Beach in 1990, where she continued to volunteer her time and efforts with Holy Spirit Catholic Church, Lantana and the Delray Health Department.

She will be missed by her family and many friends.

A Memorial Mass and Celebration of her Life will be celebrated at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 1000 Lantana Road, Lantana, Florida on Tuesday, Nov. 17 at 10:30 AM.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in her honor to the following organizations:  Hospice of Palm Beach County Foundation, 5300 East Avenue, West Palm Beach, FL 33407 or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN  38105.

Bernice Remfrey

August 25, 1925-November 4, 2014

Bernice Remfrey, age 90, of Cornwall, died on Wednesday, Nov. 4 at Wingate Nursing Home in Beacon.

The daughter of Claude and Anna (Hagert) Baird, Bernice was born on August 25, 1925 in Monroe, N.Y.

She worked for St. Luke’s Hospital in Newburgh before retiring.  She was also a member of Cornwall United Methodist Church.  She married Curtis Remfrey in July, 1944 in New York City.

Bernice is survived by her daughter, Helene Tedder of Florence, S.C., and son-in-law Russell Cullingham of Newburgh. She was the proud grandmother of six grandchildren: Heather (Mark) Joyce of Warrenton, Va., Matthew Cook of Florence, S.C, Jennifer Bediako of Newburgh, Jeremy Vesley of Newburgh, Gabi VanKurin of Florence, S.C. and Andy Remfrey of Sarasota, Fla. She was blessed with 6 great-grandchildren; Alex, Katy, Keyshan, Sarhya, Jayla and Zayden.

Bernice was predeceased in death by her husband Curtis Remfrey, Sr., three children; Curtis Remfrey Jr., Claudia Cook, and Candice Cullingham and son-in-law Warren Tedder.
