Janet Dempsey

Janet Dempsey, Cornwall’s Town Historian for many years, died in Beacon on Oct. 27 after a long illness. She was 94.

Miss Dempsey wrote a history column for The Cornwall Local from 1991-2015 and was a co-author of “Cornwall, New York: Images from the Past.” Along with Colette Fulton, she compiled a massive index of old editions of the Local that is stored near the microfiche in the Cornwall Public Library.

The daughter of Dr. George and Laura Dempsey, she taught at Willow Avenue School for many years. Her most famous student, Gen. David Petraeus, paid her special visit after he was honored at the middle school.
