MONUMENT
Fifty years ago, The Cornwall Local asked its readers if they knew what was engraved on the four sides of the Soldiers and Sailors Monument in town.

It’s doubtful that many people knew the answer or even realized that the monument was engraved.

The side facing Hudson Street reads, “With malice toward none, with charity for all.” — Abraham Lincoln

On the reverse side is a simple quote from Gen. Ulysses S. Grant — “Let us have peace.”

The remaining two inscriptions are “In memory of the men who died for their country” and “Erected by the citizens of Cornwall, 1904.”

Did you know that?
