Clark’s victory creates a vacancy

Randy Clark will become the Town’s new supervisor on Jan. 1. He won the position by outpolling Mary Beth Greene-Krafft 1,720 to 1,195.

Helen Bunt and Peter Russell will be part of the new board after finishing on top of a five-person race. They both have experience in local government. Mrs. Bunt is a former Town Board member, Planning Board member and supervisor. Mr. Russell is currently a trustee in the Village of Cornwall-on-Hudson.

They will be joining Betty Longinott, who was elected to the board in 2011. One of their first tasks will be to vote on a person to fill the seat vacated by Mr. Clark. Under Town Law 64(5) when there is a vacancy, the Town Board by majority vote appoints a qualified person to fill the open position.

In other races, Renata McGee was unopposed in her bid to retain the Town Clerk’s job, and Kevin Hines earned another term in the county legislature. The tallies were:

Legislature, 12th district
Kevin Hines 2,568
Brett Broge 1,307

Town supervisor
Randy Clark 1,720
M.B. Greene-Krafft 1,195

Town Board
Helen Bunt 1,626
Peter Russell 1,491
Michael Summerfield 1,001
Rusty O’Dell 945
Eileen Hartmann 640

Town Clerk
Renata McGee 2,374

The turnout was comparatively light. A total of 3,218 people cast ballots, as compared to last year when more than 5,000 Cornwall residents voted in the presidential election.

Two long-time board members will be stepping down in January. After serving two full terms, Al Mazzocca decided not to seek re-election at age 86. Mary Beth Greene-Krafft opted to run for supervisor rather than seek another term on the Town Board, where she had served for 15 years — including 10 as deputy supervisor.
