The Lions attracted more Halloween artists than they expected. The volunteers mounted 140 poster sheets on storefronts in the Town and Village. The turnout was light at first. But the kids kept coming. By late Saturday morning, the Lions had to put up more sheets so that no one was left out of the contest.

It was cold on Oct. 26. The sunny places on Main and Hudson Street filled up first. Parents tried to stay warm as they watched their offspring, and made occasional suggestions. One youngster who accidentally misspelled a word took her mother’s advice and painted over a lower-case “i” until it looked like a capital “E.” Another artist complained that she had drawn a house that looked like it was falling down. But that’s not a bad effect for a Halloween picture.

Three of the middle school contestants took a break from their work to enjoy egg sandwiches. The nourishment may have added to their inspiration. Not many others ate while they worked, but all of the kids received coupons that could be redeemed for a slice of pizza and a soda at any one of the Town’s three pizzerias.

As a result of the good weather, the artwork remained on display long after the contest was over. The winners will be announced in next week’s issue.
