Margaret M. Satterly

Margaret M. Satterly, of Cornwall, NY entered into eternal rest on November 6, 2023 at her home with her devoted daughter by her side. She was 98 years old.

The daughter of the late James Michael McCarthy and Julia (Prause) McCarthy, Margaret was born on June 24, 1925 in Newburgh, NY.  

Margaret graduated from Cornwall schools as salutatorian of her high school class. After graduation from New Paltz college she started her teaching career in Newburgh schools.  In 1960 she began teaching in Cornwall where she is remembered by many as their favorite kindergarten teacher.

Margaret was an active member of Meals on Wheels, Hudson Valley Honor Flight, Fact and Fancy and the Horse Thieves Society.  She volunteered with Hospice, taught Sunday School and served as advisor for the Cornwall cheerleaders.  Margaret was an avid tennis player with the Cornwall School League and a member of the Tusculum Tennis Team and Swim team.  At New Paltz, where she graduated Magna Cum Laude, she was a member of the Arethusa Sorority and Secretary of State Chapter of Arethusa Sorority, New Paltz Teachers Honor Society for Educators and NYS Honor Society for Educators as well as a Teaching Demonstrator for college teaching students and taught summer sessions as demonstration.

She and her daughter Susan have hosted and sponsored many West Point Cadets who along with their families became lifelong friends. 

 Margaret loved entertaining family and friends and was a great storyteller.  Even at 98, she could remember details of her many friends and students and experiences growing up in Cornwall. Anyone who has met her has heard many of these stories. She will be missed greatly.

In addition to her parents, Margaret was preceded in death by her beloved husband: Charles S. Satterly.  She is survived by her loving daughter: Susan Satterly at home; and by her granddaughter: Leslie Limoges and her many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family and friends. 

Memorial Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 2nd at Bethlehem Presbyterian Church, 1520 NY-94, New Windsor, NY 12553 followed by a Funeral Service at noon.  Inurnment will take place immediately following the Funeral Service at the Bethlehem Cemetery and a reception will follow at the Bethlehem Fellowship Hall.

 Memorial Contributions in Margaret’s name may be made to Susan Satterly, 3 Riley Road, New Windsor, NY 12553 to help with the upkeep of the Memorial Garden at Bethlehem Cemetery which Margaret and Charlie created and have maintained for many years since.
