Doris Jones Clearwater

August 29, 1927—February 1, 2023

Cornwall, NY

A house is made of brick and mortar, but its real value is the life it contains. Doris Jones Clearwater and Belding F. Clearwater built a home in 1950 on Jones Farm in Cornwall, NY. There were many happy memories contained in those walls; raising three boys, multiple pets and seventy-three wonderful years of marriage. The last moment came February 1, when Doris surrounded by her loving family left us and joined our heavenly Father in the house God built for her.

Doris was born August 29, 1927 on Jones Farm, second daughter of Raymond E. Jones and Gladys Smith Jones. Together with her sisters Alma and Alice, they played and worked alongside their parents and their Uncle Chauncy. It took many hands to make a family farm work. Originally a dairy operation, the farm transitioned to orchards and gardens. The girls drove tractors, picked rocks, planted and carried water. A work ethic was born that Doris embraced to her last day.

She graduated Cornwall High School in 1945, attended Delhi School of Nursing and trained at Endicott Hospital to become a Licensed Practical Nurse. She worked many years at Cornwall Hospital attending to the needs of patients in the area. She was very proud of her starched white uniform and cap and made lifelong friends with her fellow nurses.

Doris is survived by Belding F. Clearwater who she married February 26, 1950 in the Canterbury Presbyterian Church. She was the mother of three sons: Russell A. Clearwater (Laura) of Waynesboro, PA, James C. Clearwater (Grace Jean) and David A. Clearwater (Terri) both of Cornwall; six grandchildren, three great grandchildren, several nieces and one nephew. She is predeceased by her parents and two sisters Alma J. Simmons and Alice J. Zuill.

When her sons were young Doris was involved in their many activities including Boy Scouts, Mountainville Youth Club, teaching Sunday school and being Pledge Treasurer for many years at Canterbury Presbyterian Church.

Grandma was a true farmer at heart. Her vegetable gardens were a source of great pride as well as sustenance. When not on her knees in the garden she could be found behind the counter in the store helping her customers with fruit and veggies, selling fudge, or telling how she took all the calories out of the baked goods. She was known as “Grandma” to generations of customers. She shared in their joys and sorrows and added each new addition to her extended family.

Nursing was her first career. Running Jones Farm, together with her sister Alice, and then with her son David, was her second career. Being a farmer was always in her persona. She passed on her love of the land and sterling work ethic to her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Her enthusiasm and genuineness spilled over into everything she did and everyone in her “community family” loved her for it. Doris and Belding were Grand Marshalls of the Independence Day Parade July 4, 2014 to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Jones Farm. They always enjoyed participating in the Cornwall 4th of July festivities, a celebration of love of country and small-town Cornwall.

Mom and Dad were not world travelers, never valuing wealth or worldly possessions. Their most prized accomplishments were their family, and the extended family of employees and customers of Jones Farm. One of the newspapers once asked Doris if she ever wanted to travel She replied “No need to.”  And there truly was no need – the world came to her.
