John A. Carnright

April 29, 1950—December 10, 2022

Cornwall, NY

John A. Carnright, of Cornwall, NY entered into eternal rest on December 10, 2022 surrounded by his loving family at the Kaplan Family Hospice Residence in Newburgh, NY. He was 72 years old.

The son of the late Palmer James Carnright and Dorothy (Porter) Carnright, John was born on April 29, 1950 in Newburgh, NY.

John was a graduate of Cornwall Central High School (‘68), where he was a multiple varsity letterman and a proud recipient of the Butch Kent Award.  He completed his undergraduate degree at SUNY Cortland in 1973.

Throughout his professional life, John was dedicated to the protection and conservation of the natural world.  He loved the Hudson Valley and the river that runs through it, working to maintain and restore its ecosystem.  John spent many years working for Texas Instruments and EA Engineering, Science and Technology before ultimately retiring as an Environmental Scientist for Dynegy Northeast Generation.  After his retirement from Dynegy, John worked as a private environmental consultant at Indian Point, Buchanan NY.

John was a former member of the Cornwall Recreation Committee and a former volunteer firefighter with Storm King Engine Company. He also shared his lifelong love of baseball with countless young people in the community, serving as both a coach and as the longtime President of the Cornwall Little League. He was proud to steward such an exceptional program, and oversaw the design and construction of the current “Shed”, housing the offices and concession stand of the complex.

A family statement reads: “John was a man dedicated to his family and community. He brightened lives with his special sense of humor and readiness to lend a hand to anyone in need. While we grieve his loss, we take comfort that his memory lives on in the many lives he touched and the hearts of his family and friends. We believe that he is up above and whole again. He is probably pacing near the dugout and chewing bubble gum.

For their wonderful, compassionate care of John, we would like to thank the staff at Braemar Living at Wallkill and the Kaplan Family Hospice Residence.”

Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife Judy (Milliken) Carnright at home; his daughters Amy (Carnright) DeRosa and her husband Anthony of Yorktown Heights, NY and Stephanie Carnright of New York City, NY; his precious granddaughter Katherine DeRosa; his sisters Jane Manhardt (Michael), Deborah Kucera and Kathleen Kirshner (Rob); his brother David Carnright (Louise); and sister-in-law Polly Carnright. John is also survived by his brothers in law: Michael (Patty), Keith, David (Sheena) and Mark (Laura) Milliken. There are many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins who will miss John.  In addition to his parents, John was predeceased by his brother Palmer James Carnright, Jr. and brothers in law Bob Kucera and Paul Milliken.
