Gloria (Croce) LaTorre

1927—2022

Cornwall, NY

Gloria (Croce) LaTorre, daughter of Spiridione Croce and Antonia Portelli, mother of Salvatore and Sergio Smiriglio and Rossella and Augie LaTorre, wife of Dr. Augusto LaTorre, has passed away after 94 years of life.  

Gloria was born in Tripoli, Libya in 1927.  In 1942 she and her family were forced to flee Libya in an effort to escape the British Invasion and conquest of North Africa. She survived the American and British bombardment of her home in Sicily in advance of the Allied invasion of Europe. There she lost her mother, sister and nephew during the bombing. She survived the wartime and post war famine in Sicily and migrated to Venezuela and then to the USA where she made a life with her second husband, Augusto La Torre, in the Hudson Valley. She leaves behind two siblings, Natalina Croce and Gino Croce; 8 grandchildren: Sergio, Dante, Paul, Gabriela, Marco, Dania, Hanna, and Sam; two great grandchildren:  Lily and Dante; and many friends and admirers who will all miss her warmth, her singing and her cooking.

Memorial Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 5th at Quigley-Sullivan Funeral Home, Inc., 337 Hudson Street, Cornwall-On-Hudson, NY.  A Chapel Service will take place at 2:45 p.m.  Based on new CDC guidelines adopted by NYS, fully vaccinated individuals do not need to wear masks or be socially distanced, but unvaccinated individuals must continue to wear masks and be socially distanced in the funeral home.

Elizabeth Helen Simpson Van Vorce

March 1, 1939—February 21, 2022

New Windsor, NY

Elizabeth Helen Simpson Van Vorce, 82, passed away unexpectedly on February 21, 2022 at the St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital in Newburgh, NY.   

Elizabeth was born on March 1, 1939 in Edinburgh, Scotland, the daughter of the late William and Marion (Newhall) Simpson. 

Elizabeth married the late George J. Van Vorce on November 12, 1960 while he was a member of the US Air Force stationed in Great Britain.   She was retired from the Federal Government as well as from Digital Systems Group in Warminster, PA. 

She is survived by her son, Paul (Lisa) Van Vorce of Aurora, NY and her daughter, Wendy (Jeff) Juenger of Mountainville, NY; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, as well as her brother, Bill (Marian) Simpson of Edinburgh, Scotland and several nieces and nephews and cousins.

Elizabeth was an active vital woman who loved to travel and enjoy a good glass of wine.  She always made a point of getting back home to Scotland.  She made many dear friends along the way and was very active in the Aurora community during her years of living there.  

Services will be held on Saturday, March 5, 2022 11:00 AM at the United Ministry of Aurora, 337 Main Street, Aurora, NY.  Interment will be in the columbarium.

Good-byes are not forever.  Good-byes are not the end. 

They simply mean we’ll miss you… till we meet again.
