Henry Costabel, Jr.

September 1, 1931 – July 22, 2021

Cornwall, NY

My Life by Henry Costabel Jr. (Mr C.)

9/1/31—7/22/21

I had a wonderful life.  Knew my honey, Bettyjane Odell Costabel for 70 years.  Married for 66 years.  Have three loving children that raised beautiful families.

Henry III, Elizabeth Costabel, Cameron Costabel; Louis, Katherine Costabel, Whitnee, Tom and River Skobla; Jane, Tito Maisonet, Bruce, Megan, and Miles and Emma McDonald; Kara, PJ, and Georgia and Juliette Ferris; Alyssa, Ryan, and Charlotte Velez; Kelsey, Anthony, Vinny and Victoria Armiento; Matthew, Sheri and Juniper McDonald, and son-in- law, Bruce McDonald.

I was born in NY, NY of Italian immigrants, Marie Pauline Pons Costabel & Henry Costabel Sr.  Being from northern Italy we are Protestants, proudly known as Waldensians.  I spoke Italian, French and Patois. I grew up in Manhattan and attended P.S. 166, Joan of Arc, Bronx School of Science, Cornwall High School, Upsala College and NYU. I taught history at North Junior High School for 44 years and loved every day.  My students made teaching so rewarding.  After they graduated and I would run into them, I would always kid and say they owed me homework. I also taught many of their children and grandchildren.  I had such good, fun times with my co-workers.

My memories of our children are so vivid.  Such fun and love.  Building together, helping each other, taking trips, talking, playing cards and teaching the boys to be the best bartenders.

I lived in an old farm house that took us years to finish and loved every board and nail.  My life was full.  Full of love.  I’ll miss playing grab ass with Betty and all the hugs, kisses, dancing and playing cribbage.

The only regret – I didn’t quite make 90.  What a party that would have been.  Please tell all the fun stories and keep everyone laughing.

Thank you to all my doctors in Newburgh over the years, and John and staff Hazards Pharmacy.  I had wonderful car at St. Luke’s and Westchester Medical Center.

But God won and I am content and at peace.

Love to all,
Henry

Bessie (Paul) Palamidas

July 6, 1930—July 6, 2021

Formerly Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY

It is with great sorrow to share that Bessie (Paul) Palamidas passed away on her 91st birthday, July 6 2021, with her daughter at her side.

Bessie was the third daughter of William and Katina Paul and grew up in Cornwall-on-Hudson. She graduated from Cornwall-on-Hudson High School in 1948. She was voted ‘prettiest’ and ‘wittiest’ in her high school yearbook. She was beautiful and had a very funny sense of humor, she could make anyone laugh. She loved her onyx class ring and never took it off until she was admitted to the hospital before her death. She enjoyed reading her yearbook, always wishing she could call any of her classmates.

She loved Cornwall-on-Hudson and would always say, “My first mistake was leaving Cornwall and my second mistake was not going back.” She spoke of her wish to go back to Cornwall every day.

Bessie married Dimitrios (Jimmy) Palamidas in September 1956. He proudly called her “my beautiful wife” and loved her very much. They had their only child, Katina, in June 1957 in Pasadena, California.

Bessie worked for Pacific Bell Telephone Company/ATT for 32 years as a long distance telephone operator until her retirement in 1990, when she moved to Pismo Beach to be closer to her daughter.

She moved into Katina’s house in December 2019 so her daughter could take care of her.

Bessie was preceded in death by her parents William and Katina Paul, her husband Jimmy (they were married for 28 years until his death in January 1984), and her two sisters, Ethel and Mary.

She is survived by her heartbroken daughter, Katina Palamidas, who was at her bedside when she passed. She will always be deeply missed.

You can honor her by calling someone who is alone and ask if there is something you can do to help them.

Any memories of Bessie can be shared with her daughter at Bessie0706@yahoo.com.

Monica Hornman Sibarium

July 8, 1972— July 18, 2021

Formerly Cornwall-on-Hudson. NY

What a beautiful summer day. The sun shone for the first time in weeks; golden evening sunlight engulfed her beloved family and home. We were huddled together by her side.

Monica Hornman Sibarium, the 4th child of Dutch immigrants to America, was born on the July 8th, 1972 and grew up in Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY (USA). She transitioned at home in Switzerland on the July 18th, 2021, following a long and valiant battle against ovarian cancer.

After obtaining her Master’s Degree in Teaching English as a Second Language from the University at Buffalo, Monica headed abroad to teach English in Nepal and Indonesia. Love from her university days (that would eventually become marriage) brought her to the Republic of Moldova where she became one of the youngest professors at Moldova State University and part of a team facilitating the easing of regulations to start new businesses. Moldova’s English language version of its civil code likely still contains Monica’s original edits!

Monica would eventually go on to live in Romania, The Netherlands and Switzerland, collecting deep, lifelong friendships in each country, maintaining her childhood love for tennis (winning several tournaments along the way) and raising her family – her proudest life’s work.

Monica was a loving wife, devoted mother and cherished sister, but she is known by most as a dear friend. Her legacy continues through her husband Jesse; her children Darius (21) and Mikayla (19); her siblings Margaret, Yolanda and Randy, her mother Henny and an unbelievable network of friends spanning the globe who shared, benefitted from, and contributed to Monica’s energy and spirit.

Monica completed her journey in typical Monica fashion: with class, humility, and on her own terms. She is missed beyond belief.
