Having fun outdoors!

Cornwall Little league is starting this weekend

There’s no parade and no opening ceremonies. But kids are starting to play ball.

There’s not a whole lot of them. Senior baseball and girls’ softball both have three teams. (The 10- to 12-year-old boys will start around Labor Day.) The girls are playing on a different diamond this year. You won’t have to drive to the top of the hill to watch them. The practices and games will be held on the field that is usually used for minor baseball.

People are starting to have outdoor fun again, although the change is happening slowly. The Town and Village are hosting their summer concerts. The kayak companies are busy. And the hills are filled with hikers.

Kids are not playing football yet. Normally, the youth league would start practice on Aug. 1. “But we’re not sure if there’ll be a season right now,” league president Dave Carnright admits. He’s waiting for guidance from the Orange County Youth Football League. But sports with less contact are not being delayed.

The Storm King Golf Club is about to hold its club championship. The tournament will run for two weekends, starting with a qualifying round and continuing with match play. Weather permitting, the club will crown a men’s and women’s title holder on Aug. 2 along with the winners of four men’s flights.

Weather was a factor on the morning of July 18. The temperature was on its way up to the 90s. The “feels like” index was even higher. Dan Hogan had his girls out for a softball practice that was interrupted by several water breaks. The coaches fielded the pitcher’s and catcher’s positions. Seven girls played the field while three of their teammates represented the opposition. The three batted and ran the bases. After they made three outs, they took the field and three other girls replaced them.

For those who prefer less strenuous activity during the sweltering days of summer, the Town Recreation Department is organizing family scavenger hunts that begin and end at the farmers market at Town Hall. The next hunt will take place on Wednesday, Aug. 5. Par-ticipants can sign up after 1 p.m.

Other recreation activities include Fun with Fitness (ages 10 to 15), Laugh and Learn storytelling and crafts (ages 3 to 5), Kids in Kayaks (ages 9 to 16), and Yoga in the Park (adults). To get information, you have three options. You can call 534-2070, or email recreation@cornwallny.gov or visit cornwallny.gov.
