Jeanette A. Brightbill

January 23, 1938 – May 29, 2020

Jeanette A. “Jean” Brightbill passed away peacefully at home on Friday, May 29, 2020, in Cornwall. She was 82 years old.

Daughter of the late Early Ellis Hughes and Aretta L. Estep Hughes she was born January 23, 1938 in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Jean was a homemaker in her own home.  She was a member of Ridgecrest Baptist Church in New Windsor. She was a longtime Sunday School teacher in NY and while living in West Virginia. She worked at H&R Block in Fairlea, West Virginia with her childhood, and cherished, friend Kay Hardesty.
Survivors include her children, who she loved dearly: son James J. Brightbill, Jr. and partner Octavia Miller of Newburgh, and daughter Deborah J. Malouf and husband Joseph of Fishkill; her five grandchildren, who she was so proud of, Amy Gabriel and husband R.J., James Brightbill, Shannan Sullivan and husband James Wiand, Timothy Brightbill and wife Concetta, Michelle Sullivan and partner Bryan McCarthy; and her five great-grandchildren, who she loved visits and hugs from, Reilly, Brennan, Kaelyn, Reagan and Trent.

Jean is predeceased by her husband James J. Brightbill, Sr. and her brother William Hughes.

Interment will take place at Eagle Valley Cemetery in Town of Highlands. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital: 501 St. Jude Place Memphis, TN 38105.

Bob Gustafson

May 14, 2020

Formerly of Cornwall

Bob Gustafson, loving husband and son, passed from this life at the age of 61 on May 14, 2020.

Bob moved to St. Croix in 1969, and attended St. Croix Country Day School, where his father taught for many years. He graduated high school from Storm King School, Cornwall, and attended college in Melbourne, Fla.

Bob had many jobs during his career, from working for a company laying fiber-optic cable undersea in Japan to construction work at Hovensa. His passion was golf, and he played almost every week at the Buccaneer Golf Course while on St. Croix. After the Hovensa closing, Bob moved to Florida, where he was self-employed. He did return to St. Croix for a year working to re-open the new facility at the old Hovensa plant. He loved life, loved animals, loved his friends and family.

He is predeceased by his father Robert, and is survived by his wife Deborah of Parish, Fla., his mother Mary of Sun City Center, Fla; an aunt, Ruth Wolf of Philadelphia, Penn.; and several cousins living throughout the States.
He is and will continue to be, greatly, greatly missed. A celebration of Bob’s life will be held at a future date in Florida.

Dorothy T. Van Leuven

September 1, 1932 – May 26,2020

Cornwall

Dorothy (Dot) T. Van Leuven, of Cornwall entered into eternal rest on May 26 at her home surrounded by her loving family.  She was 87 years old.

The daughter of the late Cecil Rhodes and Mildred (Larkin) Rhodes, Dorothy was born in Newburgh on Sept. 1, 1932. She was married to the late Delford Van Leuven, who predeceased her in 1978.

Dorothy was a wonderful mother and grandmother, always putting her family first. She loved country music and Jimmy Sturr, crossword puzzles, walks throughout Cornwall, sweets, watching the Yankees and spending time with her family. She will forever be missed and loved by all her family and friends.

Dorothy is survived by her sons Delford “Rusty” J. Van Leuven of New Windsor and Richard “Rick” L. Van Leuven of Dallas, Texas; her grandchildren Brandon D. Van Leuven and his significant other Melissa Mead Papish of Brookfield, Conn., Jacquelynn C. Van Leuven Stark and her husband Joshua of Cornwall, Alexander Hackett of Walden, and Bradley Martin of Loveland, Col.; her great grandchildren Alexandra G. Van Leuven, Bailey S. Van Leuven, Matthew J. Papish and Johannes C.R. Stark; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Due to the public health concerns of the Coronavirus (Covid-19), memorial services for Dorothy will be private. On behalf of the family, thank you for your understanding and support during this difficult time.

Daniel L. Ward

November 13, 1938 – April 30, 2020

Formerly of Cornwall

Daniel “Dan” L. Ward, Jr. entered into eternal rest on April 30. Dan was a resident of Wellington, Fla. but previously resided in Plantation, Fla. and Cornwall for many years.

The son of Daniel L. and Kathleen (Nelson) Ward, Dan was born on Nov. 13, 1938. He was 81 years old.

Dan graduated from St. Thomas Seminary in Bloomfield, Conn. in 1955. He then joined the United State Marine Corps where he served proudly from 1959-1964.  After leaving the USMC, Dan was employed by First National City Bank (later called Citibank). He graduated from Pace College (now Pace University) in New York City with a degree in finance. Dan remained with Citibank for the remainder of his long career, rising to the position of senior vice president in Private Banking. His career with Citibank took him to Florida in 1986. Dan was devoted to his career with Citibank until his retirement.

Dan was an avid golfer and made countless friendships on the course, which he cherished for the rest of his life. He was also an enthusiastic New York Giants fan and spent most fall and winter Sundays calling plays from his living room.

In addition to his parents, Dan was predeceased by his brother Jack Ward and sister Kathleen Scali.

He is survived by his wife Florence (Hardtmann) Ward of Wellington, daughter Jennifer Ward of Wellington, daughter Barbara Williams (Robert) of Somers, and son Daniel L. Ward III of West Palm Beach. Dan is also survived by his three treasured granddaughters, Madelaine, Lily and Grace Williams, all of Somers.
