Secret’s out: High school wins ribbon

The school district received two messages from the Secretary of Education last spring. The first reported that the high school had qualified as a National Blue Ribbon School. The second, which arrived a few days later, said don’t tell anyone.

Following instructions, Superintendent Neal Miller delivered a cryptic message to the public. He cited Cornwall’s accomplishments for the year and hinted that there might be more good news in the fall.

Highland wins trophy for late chief

The Highland Engine Company came home from Warwick on Sept. 28 with a trophy. If we were talking sports, you would say “They won it for the Gipper.”

Cornwall’s representatives did well. The Storm King Engine Company won first-place awards for its marching and auxiliary. The Highland Engine Company earned a trophy for being the Best Appearing Overall Firematic Unit in the parade. Before joining the line of March, the Highland representatives toasted the late Bob Pinder.

Six new inductees for Wall of Fame

The school district is adding six plaques to its Wall of Fame at the high school, and will honor the new inductees during a special assembly on Oct. 10.

Earlier in the year, members of the community nominated 18 people for consideration. A committee reviewed the candidates and selected the following individuals: Jeff Armitage, Don Blaine, Sally Mattausch, Margaret Vatter, Dr. Ernest Stillman and Harriet Josephine Terry.

High school hosts first college fair

On Wednesday, Cornwall High School hosted its first ever college fair. About 100 college admissions counselors, and trade and technical school, military, and local company representatives, were on hand to provide students with different options for their future.

“The fact they can be at their home school, rather than other schools, is a huge plus,” Director of Guidance Joseph DeBold said on why Cornwall is hosting the event.

County has Memorial Day in the fall

Orange County observes a second Memorial Day on Sept. 29 with a service at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Goshen. The date is significant. On Sept. 29, 1918, forty Orange County soldiers lost their lives as their units breached the Hindenburg Line. “We vowed never to forget them or their sacrifice,” Jerry Oser of the American Legion said as he offered the invocation on Sunday morning.

Several people at the cemetery were members of the American Legion, like Mr. Oser. There were also many representatives of the Nam Knights.

From criminal justice to guidance

Joseph DeBold, the Cornwall Central School District’s director of guidance since February, went to college with the hopes of a career in criminal justice. However, he graduated with a degree in school counseling. While law enforcement is a noble profession, DeBold was constantly meeting kids and adults after they screwed up. He wanted to influence them before they made the wrong decisions.

Dragons finish month with victories

Amin Woods sat out most of the football game and cheered for his teammates as they blanked FDR 63-0. Claire Kelly led the girls cross country team to its fourth straight win. The boys and girls soccer teams posted victories over Monticello and Fallsburg. The volleyball team has defeated eight out of eight opponents.

There’s a proper way to pick apples

Although it doesn’t feel like it, fall has arrived. It’s at this time of year apples are ripe and families load up into the car, head to their local farm, and venture to pick their own.

One such farm, Prospect Hill Orchards in Milton, has been family owned for just over 200 years, but has only offered pick your own services for the last 40 years.
