Going Places on a Gallon
You might feel self conscious dressed up like a honey bee — but not if you were at Museum Village on June 23. There were several people wearing black and yellow costumes with wings and antennae. The occasion was the Queen Bee Honey Festival.
We’ve written about Museum Village in the past. It was one of our first stops in the “Going Places on a Gallon” series. We went back because the village has an ideal setting for special events. Organizers are attracted to the long oval lawn, which is surrounded by stately trees and a paved walkway.
We were curious about the Honey Festival. We wondered how you could devote an entire event to honey. The answer was indicated on a souvenir T-shirt. Under the title “Honey Festival” were the words “and artisan market” in smaller print.
The artisans had many more booths than the honey salesmen. But we did find some honey at the Honey Festival. And there were honey-related products — lip balm, honey mustard, chocolate foil bees and sun glasses with the bumble bee logo.
For additional entertainment, there was line dancing, wagon rides, and children’s games. The event was so popular that Museum Village had to direct several motorists to a lot for overflow parking. But once these people entered the village, there was enough room for everyone. And it was a good place to be for people who were hungry. There was no shortage of food and beverages.
Was it a bargain? It depends on your viewpoint. You could say that you paid an admissions fee for the right to spend more money. Or you could say that once you paid to get in, you had access to all the historic buildings in addition to the festival.
The Conestoga wagon was one of the most popular attractions. The driver, with his dog riding shotgun, took the passengers around the entire property that was once a 19th century farm. After seeing the wagon filled with passengers, we took out our camera and waited several minutes for its return.
