New Windsor to shut down Butterhill well

During Wednesday night’s Town Board meeting, New Windsor Supervisor George Green announced the Butterhill Wells and Treatment Plant will be shut down due to the discovery of low levels of PFOA and PFOS in the water.

While the Department of Health assured the Town Board the contamination levels are well below the recommended level and the water is acceptable for drinking, the determination was made to restart the Riley Road Water Treatment Plan in order to begin drawing water from the Catskill Aqueduct.

Green said he anticipates it will take a few weeks to get the plant up and running at full capacity.

The town contacted the Department of Environmental Conservation and the Department of Environmental Protection insisting they help provide a treatment system to deal with this issue.
