Joan Foley

September 24, 1933 – January 16, 2019

Joan Mar-garet Woodruff Smith Foley passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Jan. 16 in Clermont, Fla. Joan was born in Cornwall on Sept. 24, 1933 to the late William and Mary Ellen Fitzgerald Woodruff.

She attended Sacred Heart Elementary School and graduated from Highland Falls High School in 1951. She was a long-time resident of the Town of Highlands, raising her family in Fort Montgomery with her husband, Howard H. Smith. Joan was a proud employee of the U.S. Postal Service, retiring after 23 years achieving the position of postmaster of the Bear Mountain Post Office for over a decade.

She is survived by her sisters and brothers-in-law Jane & Neil Tosolini and Ann & Patrick Kearney; children – Gail Reynolds (Markus), Brenda Baker, Howard Smith (Linda), Bradley Smith; stepsons, Lawrence Foley Jr. (Debby) and Thomas Foley (Marta); grandchildren – Petey Baker, Kristy Castro, Keith & Todd Reynolds, Sheri Guerrette, Markus Reynolds, Allison, Patrick, Bradley, Megan, Jonathan and Carolyn Smith, Bryan, Brett, Brooke, Joey and Kanani Foley; great-grandchildren Mackenzie, Haley, Vincent and Rylee Castro, Rylan and Carson Baker, James and Lily Reynolds; and several nieces and nephews, including her special niece and namesake, Nancy Joan Hannigan.

Joan was predeceased by her loving husband, Lawrence Foley, Sr.; brothers Robert, Donald, Kenneth and Henry Woodruff; sister Gloria W. Hannigan; and son Roger Smith.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 12 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2 at Blessed Sacrament Chapel in Fort Montgomery followed by interment in Peacedale Cemetery.

Paul Andrew Herbert

August 31, 1961- January 26, 2019

Cornwall

With profound sadness the family of Paul Andrew Herbert announces his passing on Saturday, Jan. 26 at the young age of 57. Paul passed away peacefully at home after a long battle with ALS. The amazing courage and strength Paul displayed over the last three years was truly inspiring to all and a testament to his deep faith in God.

Paul will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 22 years, Mary Jayne and his cherished daughter, Emily Jayne Herbert of Cornwall. Paul is also survived by his mom, Janet Herbert of New Windsor, his brothers: Bruce Herbert (Amy) of College Station, Texas and Gregory Herbert (Janel) of Los Gatos, Calif. In addition, he is survived by his father and mother-in-law: David and Lorraine McLeod, sisters and brothers-in law: Cheryl and William Riegel and Debra and Mark Cable, David McLeod and Christopher McLeod; as well as 11 nieces and nephews. Paul was predeceased by his father, Otto Herbert.

Paul was a corporate buyer for IBM for 33 years. He was a parishioner and active at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Cornwall as well Habitat for Humanity in Newburgh. Paul was also an avid sports enthusiast and enjoyed hiking and camping in the Adirondacks. He was frequently seen being a Trail Angel for the many backpackers hiking the Appalachian Trail, providing water and other needed resources.

Visitation will be held on Friday, Feb. 1 from 4-8 p.m. at Quigley-Sullivan Funeral Home, 337 Hudson Street, Cornwall-on-Hudson, A mass will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church, (66 Clinton St., Cornwall) on Feb. 2 at 11 a.m.

Lucile Meyer Hutchins

September 13, 1914-November 14, 2018

formerly of Cornwall-on-Hudson

Lucile Meyer Hutchins, formerly of Cornwall-on-Hudson, died at her home in Ashland, Ore., on Nov. 14, after a short illness. She had recently turned 104.

Lucile was born on Sept. 13, 1914. One of her earliest memories was of the victory parade in her hometown of Pittsburgh, Penn., celebrating the end of the First World War.

Lucile lived with her family in Cornwall-on-Hudson from 1952 to 1975. During that time, she led Girl Scout and Cub Scout troops, was an avid gardener, and served as president of the PTA. For many years she managed her husband’s office in Newburgh. All four of her children graduated from Cornwall Central High School.

After the death of her husband, Dr. William J. Hutchins, in late 1974, Lucile sold their home, moved to California, and worked at the University of California, Berkeley. After retiring, Lucile lived in Lyon, France, for a year and, when she was 80 years old, fulfilled a lifelong ambition and traveled around the world, returning to live near her son and daughter-in-law in Bothell, Wash.. She moved to Ashland in 2014.

She is survived by her son Bill; daughters Anne, Lucy, and Jeannie; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Lloyd N. Neville, Jr.

October 29, 1941-January 20, 2019

Cornwall

Lloyd N. Neville, Jr. of Cornwall entered into rest on Sunday, Jan. 20. He was 77.

The son of the late Lloyd N. Neville, Sr. and Rose Rogers Neville, he was born on Oct. 29, 1941 in Cornwall.

Lloyd was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran who proudly served his country. He was a retired splicer for Verizon and a life member of both the Storm King Engine Co. #2, and the Black Rock Fish and Game Club. He was a member of American Legion Post 1796 and Ellenville Elks Post 1971.

Lloyd was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, and he will be deeply missed by everyone whose lives he touched.

Survivors include: his loving wife, Marie, at home; son Lance Neville and his wife Tammy; grandchildren: Courtney, Cole and Carly; their mother, Cindy Neville; sister Catherine McVeigh; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law in New Mexico; many nieces, nephews and cousins; his close friends Bob Brophy, Pete Siegel, Dr. William Lee; plus too many others to mention.

There will be no visitation. A Memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 2 at St. Thomas of Canterbury Church, 340 Hudson St., Cornwall-on-Hudson. Interment will be in the spring in the Orange County Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery in Goshen.

Laura A. (McArdle) O’Connor

September 28, 1955-January 24, 2019

Cornwall

Laura A. (McArdle) O’Connor, of Cornwall entered into eternal rest on Jan. 24 at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in Manhattan. She was 63 years old.

The daughter of the late John J. McArdle and Mary M. (Sheppard) McArdle, Laura was born on Sept. 28, 1955 in Manhattan in New York City.

She was a proud retired employee of United Airlines, having worked for over 30 years in various customer service positions. Her last assignment was at Newark Airport in New Jersey.

Laura was a contagiously warm and enthusiastic person, extremely devoted to her family. In her too short retirement, she loved to travel, and happily gave of her time to numerous charitable organizations, including the Food Bank of the Hudson Valley. Those who met her will never forget her. She was the true matriarch of her family; leaving a void which will never be filled.

Laura is survived by her loving husband Michael P. O’Connor at home; her sons Patrick J. O’Connor and his wife Cassandra of Brooklyn, and Sean M. O’Connor of Cornwall; her daughter Margaret (O’Connor) Cuomo and her husband Kevin of Cornwall; her brothers: Ronald and Gerard McArdle; and her sisters: Beth Eybers and Valarie Durkin. Laura is also survived by nieces, nephews, cousins, and cousins-in-law, with whom she was extremely close.

Visitation was held on Sunday, Jan. 27 at Quigley-Sullivan Funeral Home, Inc., in Cornwall-on-Hudson. A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Jan. 28 at St. Thomas of Canterbury Church, in Cornwall-on-Hudson. Interment followed the Mass at Frederick Loescher Veterans Memorial Cemetery in New Hempstead.
