H. Peter Stern

June 12, 1928 -November 11, 2018

Mountainville

In 1960 H. Peter Stern co-founded with Ralph E. Ogden Storm King Art Center, a unique outdoor museum with an unparalleled collection of large-scale sculptures and site-specific commissions that are thoughtfully installed in a 500-acre landscape with stunning views and open sky.  As Storm King’s Founding President and Chair of the Board, he turned Storm King into an internationally recognized destination to see large-scale art in nature.

Peter Stern was born in 1928 in Hamburg, Germany, and grew up in Bucharest, Romania. His family fled the Nazis in 1939 and moved to Scarsdale in 1940.  Stern graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Harvard in 1950.  He earned an MA from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs in 1953 and a JD from Yale Law School in 1954.  He  was recruited by Ralph E. Ogden, his father-in-law, to work at the family business, Star Expansion Company, a leading manufacturer of fasteners and bolts.  After Ogden’s death in 1974, Stern developed Storm King into the truly public museum it is today. As a devoted lover of music and poetry, Stern played annually at the Art Center with the Mountainville Quartet.

The Ralph E. Ogden Foundation, which Stern led for more than three decades, helped to fund local and regional organizations, including the Hudson Highlands Nature Museum, Black Rock Forest, Cornwall Hospital, and Storm King School. Stern served on the board of Vassar College and Hudson Valley Pattern for Progress and was deeply involved with Scenic Hudson and Open Space Institute. In 1999, he received the Eleanor Roosevelt, Val-Kill Award.

For many years, Stern served on the board of the World Monuments Fund and International Rescue Committee, both based in New York City.  Stern’s passion to preserve cultural landmarks was manifest in many projects locally and around the world.
