American Legion Post 353 will host its annual Veterans Day observance at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 11. The ceremony will take place in front of the Soldiers and Sailors Monument across the street from Town Hall.

As in the past, organizations will be invited to place wreaths at the monument to honor deceased veterans. Zachary Hommel, a talented high school musician, will play “Taps.” And the post commander will honor long-time resident Al Vanacore, who received five medals while serving in Vietnam.

After the ceremony, veterans are invited to gather for a group picture at the American Flag display in front of the middle school. All of the flags have been donated by teachers and students.

There is also a reception for veterans and the entire community at the Cornwall Public Library from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. It’s one of the library’s most popular programs. And it brings all ages together to recognize and honor those who have served our country.

Last year, Orange County Veterans Service Agency recognized the library for its support of Orange County veterans. This year, 2018, marks the 100th Anniversary of the Armistice that ended World War I on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.

The library invites the community to bring in photos of local residents in uniform for the Library’s Wall of Honor. Veterans are welcome to share their stories, and all visitors can create thank you cards that will be sent to people who served in the military.

In addition to a wall filled with photos, there will be a display of memorabilia — including old uniforms, medals and helmets.

At 2 o’clock there’s a special program at the Purple Heart Hall of Honor. And on the Friday before the holiday, Willow Avenue Elementary School will continue its tradition of welcoming veterans who will share their experiences with the students.
