Rev. Dr. Moses Carter, Sr.

October 23, 1934 – October 17, 2018

Highland Falls

Ret. CSM, Rev. Dr. Moses Carter, Sr., of Highland Falls,  passed from this life on Oct. 17 at St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital in Newburgh. He was born in Rice, Va. on Oct. 23, 1934 to Walter and Isabel Carter Puryear.

He entered the U.S. Army in 1959. Over 26 years, he received numerous awards and citations, and graduated from the Sergeant Major Academy.

Answering the call to ministry, he preached his trial sermon in 1987 at St. John AME Zion Church, Highland Falls. He graduated from the New York Theological Seminary in May 1991. In June he was appointed pastor of Mt. Tabor A.M.E. Zion Church, where he faithfully served for 11 years. He was the pastor of St. John A.M.E. Zion Church, Highland Falls from 2002 until his retirement in 2017. He nurtured his beloved congregation.

He leaves behind the love of his life and committed wife of 57 years, Barbara Carter of Highland Falls; children, Moses Carter, Jr. (Kristen) of Highland Falls, Michelle D. Finklea (Gus) of Goodyear, Ariz.; Wanda D. Harris of Lewisberry, Penn. and Terrence Carter (Tremaine) of Trenton, N.J. He is survived by his four sisters and two brothers; 10 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild; and nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Joseph (Pete) Puryear; grandsons Terrence Carter, Jr. and Gus T. Finklea; great-granddaughter, Brijae Harris; and son-in-law Ronnie Harris, Sr.

Rev. Dr. Carter will repose 5-8 p.m., Friday, Oct. 26, at St. John AME Zion Church, 7 Muller Ave., Highland Falls.  Final visitation is 9-10 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 27, at Greater Centennial AME Zion Church, 312 S. 8th Ave., Mt. Vernon. Home-going Celebration is at 11 a.m. at the church.  Interment with full Military Honors at Orange County Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Goshen.

Shirley Casterlin

March 13, 1921-October 18, 2018

Cornwall

Shirley Casterlin of Cornwall entered into rest on Thursday, Oct. 18,.  She was 97 years young.

The daughter of the late William and Helen Carney Brunner, she was born on March 13, 1921 in Newburgh.

Shirley walked all over town, especially to St. John’s Episcopal Church every Sunday and religious holiday  – until Easter Sunday four years ago, when she fell before church and broke her hip.

Shirley was an amazing person.  She had a gentle and humble soul, and loved her prayer book.  She was a caring and loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and great-great grandmother. Her smile and encouragement will be missed beyond words by her entire family.

Survivors include: daughters Shirley Cannelli and husband Carmen; Evelyn (Ebby) Needham; Helen Bunt; Diane Casterlin; son Tjerick Casterlin and wife Elizabeth; grandchildren: Vincent Cannelli and fiancé Jacqueline Hoey, Corinn Scoppa and husband Philip, Steven Bunt and wife Sherry, Walter Bunt and wife Linda, Jennifer Casterlin, Tjerick Casterlin, Jr. and wife Elisha, Jason Casterlin and wife Jessica, and Krissy, Karen and Julie Casterlin; and many great and great-great grandchildren.  She was predeceased by her husband, Russell Casterlin, son Kenneth Casterlin, brothers Harry and William Brunner and son-in-law Walter Bunt.

Visitation was held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 22 at James F. Lulves Funeral Home in Cornwall-on-Hudson.  A funeral service was held on Tuesday, Oct. 23 at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 66 Clinton St., Cornwall, and was followed by interment in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Mountainville, NY.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Shirley’s memory please be made to St. John’s Episcopal Church.

Una B. Ryan

October 5, 1933-October 21, 2018

Cornwall

Una B. Ryan, of Cornwall, entered into eternal rest on Oct. 21 at Good Samaritan Ho-spital in Suffern. She was 85.

The daughter of Murtagh Hamill and Sarah (Tennyson) Hamill, Una was born on Oct. 5, 1933 in Brooklyn.

Una received a degree in Nursing and was retired from the VA Castle Point Hospital in Wappingers Falls. During and after her career, she was the founder, owner and operator of Slemish Kennels.

She was an active member of St. Joseph’s Church. “She had a love for animals,” her family said, “that was as deep and profound as her love for the Lord. Specifically Shetland Sheepdogs/Collies which she had dedicated an immense amount of time to training, showing, breeding and befriending. Her love for her family was just as significant. This she displayed in every hot meal she prepared, every thoughtful gift she gave and every ounce of honesty.  She will be missed greatly.”

Una was predeceased by her loving husband, Daniel G. Ryan in 2015.  She is survived by her son: Kieran D. Ryan; her daughter: Deirdre M. Ryan and wife, Melanie Mann-Ryan; her daughter-in-law: Cathy Ryan; her grandchildren: Brendan Ryan, Eamonn Ryan, Deirdre Buchanan, Roland Monroe and Christina Melanson; and three great grandchildren: Emma Ryan Melanson, Gavin Monroe and Gabriela Monroe.  In addition to her husband, Una was predeceased by her son: Major Brendan Ryan U.S.M.C.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 2 at St. Joseph’s R.C. Church, 4 St. Joseph Place, New Windsor,.  Inurnment will follow the Mass at St. Thomas Cemetery, Cornwall. Cremation took place at Cedar Hill Crematory, Middle Hope.

Memorial contributions in Una’s name may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
