Ground breaking

(Photo by Jason Kaplan)  After five years, the Cornwall High School Environmental Club has enough money to rebuild its organic garden. Through fund raising, donations, and grants, $6,000 was raised. The fence will be shortened by 20 feet to move the garden away from the parking lot and restore state designation as an organic garden. Using vertical space will yield 40 percent more produce in 20 percent less area. Each bed will be ADA compliant and will only include organic and heirloom plantings. The garden will be removed from the school’s irrigation system and will instead use hydrosource crystals which will absorb water and disperse it as needed. Anything grown will be used in the school’s kitchen or will be donated to the Food Bank of the Hudson Valley. To volunteer to take care of the garden during the summer or to receive a donor form, contact Eva Whorley at ewhorley@cornwallschools.com. Volunteers may take home any produce ready for picking.
