Local residents need new ID to go on West Point

Beginning Tuesday, things change a little bit for non-Department of Defense ID card carrying persons trying to enter West Point.
But don’t worry. Visitors are still welcome on post, and by taking a few minutes to get yourself a ‘West Point Local Area Credential’ ID card, you will be able to enter post basically no differently than before. In fact, Garrison Commander Col. Landy Dunham said, it may get you through the gates more quickly.

Here’s a rundown of the new policy:
— If you are in possession of a valid Department of Defense issued identification card, you may enter West Point and other federally controlled installations.
— Visitors 17-years-old and above without a valid Department of Defense issued identification card must report to the Visitor Control Center — located inside the Visitor’s Center   —  to have a NCIC-III background check prior to entering West Point. After completing the background check, persons will be issued a West Point Local Area Credential.
