After nearly an hour of deliberation, the Cornwall Central School District Board of Education approved, Monday night, a tax exemption for veterans. The vote was 5-4 in favor of the resolution. The board agreed to exemption amounts of $6,000 in property value for wartime veterans, an additional $4,000 for combat veterans, and an additional $20,000 for disabled veterans. If all 834 eligible veterans opt to take advantage of the exemption, the end result would be a 0.50 percent increase in the tax rate for non-veteran tax payers, or a $50 increase for someone paying $10,000 in school taxes.
The final vote was as follows: Yays – Charles Frankel, Melanie Mulroy-Robinson, Larry Berger, Rafael Ortiz, and David Moretto; Nays – Diana McNally, Barbara Manzari, James Congelli, and Greg Whalen.
