As Kevin Gangemi neared the final turn of the 400-meter race, he surged ahead of the two athletes who had been running along side of him. By the time, he reached the finish line, the Cornwall senior was in front by 10 yards.
He was happy to win a section title at the Class B meet at Dietz Stadium in Kingston. But Kevin was also interested in his time. His coaches both had “48 plus” on their stop watches, but that was unofficial. So there was a moment of doubt until the results were announced.
Kevin had finished the race in 49.19 seconds, eclipsing the Cornwall record Kris Kolewe set seven years ago. Overall, May 28 was a good day for the Dragons, who were moved down a notch so Classes A and B would be the same size. A school’s class is determined by its enrollment.
In the team standings, the boys were a close second to New Paltz, and the girls finished far ahead of Rondout Valley, their closest pursuer (247-101).
Katie Murphy (hurdles and high jump) and Beatrice Boylan (1500 meters and steeplechase) were double winners. The Dragons finished first in five out of six relays.
