Genevieve F. Dabrowski Chewens

August 31, 1930-June 13, 2014

Genevieve F. Dabrowski Chewens, “Mrs. C”, of Cornwall N.Y, died peacefully on Friday, June 13, at Wingate at Beacon with her loving family by her side.

Daughter of Ignatius and Genevieve Rewekant Dabrowski, Genevieve was born on Aug. 31, 1930 in Queens. She enjoyed reading, dancing, playing Mahjong and spending time with her family and friends. She was retired from The New York Telephone Company. Genevieve was also an original owner of Chewens Delicatessen, which opened in Highland Falls in 1979.

She is survived of her children Carol and Bob Ward of Cornwall, Marilyn and Jack Mellon of Lady Lakes, Fla., Diane and Joseph Kollmer of Sayville, N.Y., John and Jackie Chewens of Newburgh, Margaret Sporbert and her fiancé John Balzarini of Franklin Square, N.Y., Michael Chewens of Vestal, N.Y., Robert and Lucy Chewens of Cornwall-on-Hudson, and her brother and sister-in- law Alfred and Fran Dabrowski of Dayton, Ohio. Genevieve was also the grandmother of 19 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by all.

Genevieve was predeceased by John J. Chewens, her husband for 49 years, and by her brothers and sisters: Lucien Dabrowski, Viola Parkinson, Ignatius Dabrowski, Leon Dabrowski, Joseph Dabrowski, Stanley Dabrowski, Victoria Trela, and infant brother Joseph Dabrowski.

Memorial contributions may be sent in Genevieve’s name to Wingate Beacon Resident Council, 10 Hastings Dr. Beacon, NY 12508.

There will no visitation. Friends and family are welcome to attend a Funeral Mass that will be held on Saturday, June 21 at 10 a.m. at St. Thomas of Canterbury Church 340 Hudson Street in Cornwall-on-Hudson.

Matthew T. Clancy

June 15, 2014

Matthew T. Clancy, 47, of Cornwall-on-Hudson passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, June 15.  He was the son of the late Timothy and Rosalie (Dolly) Clancy of Cornwall.  He is survived by his wife Francine, daughter of Louis and JoAnn Volpe, also of Cornwall; by his two daughters, Jaclyn and Janine Clancy, and by his only sister, Kathleen Anthony (Charlie) of New Paltz.

A beloved husband, devoted father and true friend, no call for help ever went unanswered. He loved doting on his daughters and delighted in being their father.  He demonstrated each day to them what it is to be loved and set an amazing example of how to live.  His girls are heartbroken and saddened to lose such a magnificent father.

He was a 15 year employee of the Village of Cornwall-on-Hudson and provided 29 years of dedicated service to Storm King Engine Co. #2.  He served in several roles, including chief and president  Matt was the current President of the Storm King Volunteer and Exempt Fireman’s Association, past President of the Orange County Volunteers Fireman’s Association Inc., and an honorary member of the Highland and Mountainville Companies.

Matt was a member of Ancient Order of Hibernians and the Newburgh Elks’ Club. In 1999, Matt founded the Bruce Armitage Memorial Softball Tournament in honor of his good friend and brother firefighter.  Proceeds from the tournament have provided educational funds for Bruce’s children and annual athletic scholarships for two Cornwall seniors.

Visitation was held at Brooks Funeral Home in Newburgh on Wednesday June 18. A funeral Mass was held at the Church of St. Francis of Assisi in Newburgh at 10 a.m. on June 19.

Carolina A. Connolly

October 7, 1915-March 21, 2014

Carolina A. Connolly, 98, passed away on March 21. She was residing at Country Meadows Retirement Community in Hershey, Penn. with her sister Gertrude Brown.

A longtime resident of Cornwall, Carolina was born October 7, 1915, in Newburgh, the daughter of Charles H. and Helen Turner Ferguson. She attended Newburgh City Schools and Newburgh Free Academy, and in 1940 married Vincent J Connolly of Cornwall, an editorial staff writer for The Newburgh Evening News.

Mrs. Connolly is survived by her daughter Carole (Richard) Odgers of Cudjoe Key, Fla., her son Michael (Mary Ann) Connolly of Englewood, Fla., granddaughter Erin (Mark) Rapp of Hershey, Penn., grandson Sean Connolly of Englewood, Fla., and great granddaughters Reganne and Alexandra Rapp of Hershey, PA.

There will be a graveside remembrance service at 11 a.m. Saturday June 21 at Woodlawn Cemetery on Route 94 and Union Avenue in New Windsor.

Catherine Howard

November 11, 1931-June 16, 2014

Catherine Howard, of New Windsor entered into eternal rest on June 16 at St Luke’s Cornwall Hospital in Newburgh. She was 82 years old.

The daughter of Harold and Catherine Perry, she was born on Nov. 11, 1931 in Newburgh.

Catherine was retired and formerly employed by Related Management Corporation in New York City as an Office Manager.

She was a graduate of Newburgh Free Academy.  A beloved wife, devoted mother and true friend.  Catherine set an amazing example of how to survive through life’s difficulties without complaint.  She will be greatly missed.

Catherine is survived by her loving husband Arthur, of 62 years. Two children: Karla and husband Sonny Thomas of Theresa, N.Y.; Stacey and husband Jeffrey Stringer of New Windsor; six grandchildren: Jennifer and Jamie Akins, Christopher Anderson, Zachary Stringer, Miranda, Lydia and Gretchen Thomas and eight great grandchildren: Gabrielle and Valerie Akins, Tyler, Lori and Maya Collins, Carrick Thomas, Talon Bevilacqua, and Ryker Groginski.

She was predeceased by her son Glenn Arthur Howard.

Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Saturday, June 21st at Quigley Bros. Funeral Home, 337 Hudson Street, Cornwall-on-Hudson. NY.
