A wide receiver in football; Marcus Louis can dunk in basketball. He doesn’t concentrate on track and field until the spring. But since the start of April, he’s been getting better every week. He proved it at the Monroe-Woodbury Crusader Relays on May 3 when he erased the second oldest mark in the Cornwall record book.
Alex Montanez had set the standard for the triple jump in 1974 with a distance of 43 feet 8.25 inches. Louis went more than a foot beyond that on a warm Saturday afternoon. His distance of 45 feet one-half inch placed him second in a field of 27 athletes. He also scored in the long jump and as a member of the 1600-meter relay team.
On the track, the most competitive event of the day was a battle between Cornwall teammates Mike Vecchio and Aidan Doyle in the 1500-meter run. Mike led by a few steps from beginning to end. Whenever Aidan tried to take the lead, Mike accelerated.
They finished one-two at the end of the race with less than a half-second between them. “Mike refused to lose,” Coach Brian Creeden reported the following day. “But in that race Aidan made Mike a better runner.
The foursome of Kaili Markley, Zoe Scileppi, Victoria Caroli and Abby Munterich won the 3200-meter relay in the frosh-soph meet in the morning.
