Lois Griscom Anderson

Lois Griscom Anderson, age 94, passed away peacefully at home on Nov.10. She was born in Somerville, N.J., the youngest child of Minor and Anna Huff Griscom.

She played in piano recitals at Carnegie Hall as a teenager and gave private piano lessons for 75 years. She also became a choir director and church organist.

Her niece, Marie Anderson McCarthy referred to Lois as “a loving, inspirational presence in our family for 94 years.”   Lois recorded 40 hymns and was a member of ASCAP.

She graduated from National Bible Institute in New York, where she met a tall, handsome student minister who invited her to play the piano at one of his services. They fell in love and married soon after.

Together they established Jubilee Youth Ministries in Brooklyn; an inspirational television program called “Life’s Lighthouse”; and Jubilee Ranch in Port Jervis, which provided camping experiences for thousands of inner-city youth. They also served in many churches in the New York metropolitan area.

Lois was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. James W. Anderson and her daughter, Mary Beth Anderson, formerly of Nashville.

Survivors include her daughters Lynn Anderson Gage and husband Jerry Gage of Cornwall-on-Hudson, Carol Grace Anderson and husband Coleman Murphy of Nashville, Tenn.: son James Anderson, Jr. and wife Barbara Rick of New York City: granddaughter Jackie Gage Blea and husband Vince Blea of Avon, Conn.; grandson Jay Gage and wife Kimberly Peet Gage, of Balmville, grandson Rory Anderson Gage of Brooklyn, and seven great grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 23 at 11 a.m. at the Cornwall United Methodist Church, 196 Main Street, Cornwall. A lunchein will follow at the church,
In lieu of flowers, the family requests a contribution to the Cornwall United Methodist Church Appalachian Service Project (ASP) in memory of Lois Anderson.

Nancy Elizabeth Kennedy

Nancy Elizabeth Kennedy, beloved wife of Joseph Kennedy, passed away unexpectedly on Nov. 11.   She was 87.

A mother of five and grandmother of eight, Nancy died a day after her 57th wedding anniversary and the funeral for her only sister, Myra Zwart.

For the past 38 years, Nancy worked as a toll collector for the New York State Thruway Authority. She was named Toll Collector of the Year many times. Even after she retired she continued to work part time. She worked her last shift just three days before she died.

Nancy often volunteered for the Cornwall Hospital Auxiliary, for the Blooming Grove Humane Society and for Bingo at St. Thomas of Canterbury Church, where she was a devoted parishioner for more than 40 years.

Nancy was the daughter of Elizabeth “Bessie” Smith Henry and Joseph Henry. She was raised in New Windsor and graduated from Cornwall High School before working as a telephone operator for Bell Telephone in Newburgh.

In addition to her sister, she was predeceased by her brother, Clemence J. Henry.

Nancy leaves behind her husband and her children and their families Sharon Kennedy Satkowski and Paul Satkowski of Salisbury Mills; Barbara Kennedy Gref and Kevin Gref of Jeffersonville; JoAnn Kennedy Curry of New Windsor; Michael Kennedy of New Windsor; Lori Kennedy Faurot and David Faurot of Salisbury Mills; beloved grandchildren Justin Satkowski and his fiancé Regina Ammirati; Jonathan Satkowski and his girlfriend Heather Schreiner; Emily, Anna and Joseph Gref; Sean and Shannon Curry; and Hailey Faurot. She also leaves behind an extended family, including sisters-in-law Beth Henry and Catherine Kennedy, Roberta Kennedy, brother- and sister-in-law Martin Kennedy and Louise Kennedy plus her many nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated on  Nov. 14 at St. Thomas of Canterbury Church and was followed by burial in Orange County Veteran’s Cemetery in Goshen.

Edith (“Edie”) Mellino

July 23, 1944-November 11, 2013

Edith (Edie) Mellino died at her home in Salisbury Mills on Nov. 11. She was 69.

The daughter of Joseph and Margaret Brennan Noble, she was born in Brooklyn on July 23, 1944. She was married to Anthony Mellino and worked as secretary for West Islip Public Schools before she retired.

Survivors include her husband Anthony at home; her sons Anthony Mellino and his wife Michelle of Cornwall, and Brad Mellino of Huntington, N.Y.; her brother Joseph Noble of Havelock, NC; her sisters Margaret Santomartino of Bayshore, N.Y., Patricia Reuter of Coram, N.Y. and Geraldine Martocci of Springfield, Va.; and her grandchildren Ryan and Hannah Mellino.

Her family was due to receive visitors from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 14 at Quigley Brothers Funeral Home.

Thomas E. Sullivan

February 5, 1952- November 10, 2013

Thomas E. Sullivan of Mountainville passed away on Nov. 10 in Englewood, N.J. He was 61.

Born on Feb. 5, 1952 in Oneonta, Thomas was a retired New York City Police Officer, who had served as an MP in the Army. He was a member of NYPD PBA, Emerald Society, and the Black Rock Fish and Game Club.

Survivors include his loving wife of 41 years, Joan Sullivan; his children Justin Sullivan and his companion Sandy Knowles of Northport, Fla.; Angela Kessler of Cornwall-on-Hudson and Michael J. Sullivan of Brooklyn; his brothers William (Mike) Sullivan of Costa Rica, Richard Sullivan and his wife Tomoko of Hawaii; his mother-in-law Louise Costella of Mountainville; his brother-in-law Peter Costella of Hartford, Conn.; his son-in-law Kurt Kessler; his granddaughter and light of his life Sadie Rayne Kessler; several nieces and nephews; and many cousins, including Janet and Gary VanVoorhis, who were very close to his heart.

He was predeceased by his infant son Jason Thomas Sullivan; his father William Sullivan and mother Jane D. Sullivan; his brother David Sullivan and father-in-law Raymond Costella.

The family will receive visitors from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 15 at Quigley Brothers Funeral Home, 337 Hudson Street in Cornwall-on-Hudson.

The funeral service will be at St. Thomas of Canterbury Church in Cornwall-on-Hudson at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16, and will be followed by burial at St. Thomas Cemetery in Cornwall.

Margaret Elmira (“Myra”) Zwart

April 30, 1925-November 6, 2013

Margaret Elmira “Myra” Zwart died at her home in New Windsor on Nov. 6, surrounded by her loving family.  She was 88.

The daughter of Elizabeth Smith Henry and Joseph Henry, Myra was born in New Windsor on April 30, 1925. She attended the Bethlehem Church and the Bethlehem School, and graduated from Cornwall High School.

She was pre-deceased by her loving husband Jack Zwart. Together, they ran a family farm and raised five children. She also enjoyed working at Mid-Hudson Oxygen, Suffern Library, and MLS. Myra served as a Deacon in Bethlehem Church, volunteered as a “Pink Lady” at The Cornwall Hospital, and helped with any function at the church. She was gentle and humble, and believed that kindness and thankfulness are always the right choices.

She leaves behind five children and their families: daughter Carole Sauer (Harry) of New Windsor, Dr. James Zwart (Ann) of Dryden, NY, Michael Zwart of Yellow Springs Ohio, Susan Carden (Rev. Robert) of Naperville Ill., Timothy Zwart (Eileen) of Salisbury Mills; twelve grandchildren and their families: Rebecca Sauer,  Kelly Sauer Davis (Randy), Amy Sauer, Lorin Caffelle (Michael), Leah Hackett (Adrian), Lindsey Cook (Rob), Dr. Josh Zwart (Dr. Linda Ding), Katy Weber-Tierney (Tracy), Jennifer Hoffenkamp (Dan), Sarah Carden,  Meghan Zwart and Emily Zwart; and her nine great-grandchildren: Ellie and Jenna Davis, Shannon and Jameson Caffelle, Andrew Hackett, Anna and Matthew Cook, and Milo and Jake Weber-Tierney; also her sister Nancy Kennedy (Joseph) of Salisbury Mills, her sister in law Elizabeth Henry of New Windsor, as well as her nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by her brother Clemence Henry.

Burial took place at Hamptonburgh Cemetery and was followed by a memorial service at Bethlehem Church on Nov.10.

Memorial donations can be made to either Bethlehem Presbyterian Church of New Windsor or Hospice of Orange County.
