Black Rock Fish and Game Club had some special guests on July 12 – a group of seven homeless men from the Missionaries of Charity Queen of Peace Home in the south Bronx.

Bob Milmore, a member of the club, was a fireman in the Bronx and one day went to a fire across the street from the shelter.

“When I came down, one of the sisters said, ‘I was praying for you.’ I said to her, ‘if you need any help let me know.’”

The sisters called in a favor and the club was more than happy to oblige. The club donated a fresh stock of fish for the creek and allowed the men to fish for the afternoon. A few club members were on hand to assist the men with casting a line and reeling in their catch.

Early on, the fish were plentiful, but didn’t seem to be biting, despite the lure being close by. The men were more than happy to be patient.

Bob McCaffrey, a 14-year volunteer at the shelter, said the sisters tend to the poor and needy in the community.

At Queen of Peace, they have a soup kitchen and a homeless shelter for men. It’s an emergency shelter where the men can stay for two weeks until they find other housing. They’re provided with food, shelter, clothing, and spiritual prayer. The sisters don’t help the men find employment, but they do help them with their addictions or any other problems they have.

The sisters take a group of men fishing each year, but in the past their expeditions have been on the Hudson River.
