The table was set for two candidates at the Oct. 17 debate hosted by the Times Herald-Record. But only one of them was there. Democrat Chris Eachus sat by himself at a table in the front of the room. Bill Larkin, his opponent in the race for the state Senate, was missing.
Tuesday was a big day for Mrs. Kelly Hogan’s third-graders at Willow Avenue School. For some of them, it was their first visit to Black Rock Forest. For all of them, it was the start of a year long research project.
The school board had just heard a presentation on the Common Core Standards at the high school level. When it was time for input, the board’s president, Melanie Robinson, wondered about the future. Will colleges notice a difference in four or five years?
Besides being a principal, Kate Polumbo is a parent and a friend of other parents. On Jan. 6, she told the school board about an e-mail with an attachment she received from a friend in distress. “Do you know how to do this homework?” the woman pleaded.
