Exploding volcanoes, slimy hands, and potatoes illuminating light bulbs can only mean one thing — it’s time for the annual Elementary School Science Expo.
Cornwall Central School District third and fourth graders had their mad scientist caps on last week for the annual elementary science expo, at the middle school.
“I still love it,” Greg Schmalz told the audience at the school board meeting. “It will be hard to step away. But I do it with a lot of great memories.”
Willow Avenue Elementary School has only known one principal – Greg Schmalz. He’ll be retiring at the end of this year after a 31-year career as an educator and administrator.

All alone on the stage, Leona Cushna raised the microphone to her lips and started to sing, The third-grader was one of several performers in the Willow Avenue Talent Show on March 8.
When Willow Avenue Elementary School opened its doors for the first day of school, it also opened the door to the first district classroom dedicated to the STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, mathematics) initiative.
