Jeffrey Scott Dreher, Sr.
October 26, 1961—June 25, 2024
Cornwall, NY
Jeffrey Scott Dreher, Sr., of Cornwall, N.Y. passed away peacefully on June 25, 2024, surrounded by his children and family after a courageous battle with cancer. He was just 62 years old.
The son of Frederick (Ron) R. Dreher and the late Judith A. (Lahey) Dreher, Jeffrey was born October 26, 1961 in Waterbury, Conn. and grew up in Prospect, Conn. He graduated from Kaynor Technical High School, Central Connecticut State University, and the University of New Haven with a master’s degree in elementary education.
The highlight of Jeffrey’s professional career was being an elementary school teacher for the past 27 years, first teaching in New Britain Public Schools, then joining the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA). He relocated to Japan in 2002, teaching United States military dependents living at Camp Zama at John O. Arnn Elementary School. Upon returning to the states in 2012, Jeffrey continued his career at West Point Elementary School at the United States Military Academy in West Point, N.Y. Jeffrey had a unique way of reaching his students. He was able to take them to the highest levels of learning due in part to his passion for teaching, which was recognized by numerous awards, accolades, and thousands of thank you letters, which he received from students and parents alike.
Jeffrey loved the outdoors, staying active by golfing, bicycling, and participating in the Block Island Triathlon. His favorite activity was skiing with his children and grandchildren. Jeffrey could beat anyone in Scrabble or in a game of cribbage, spending many hours in his parents’ log cabin in Vermont, challenging his siblings and sisters-in-law to a game. His summers in Old Saybrook, when he and his family returned from Japan, created so many great memories that his large, extended family will always cherish.
Jeffrey’s greatest legacy is his children and grandchildren. He leaves behind his beautiful children, Jeffrey Dreher, Jr. (Jennifer) of Berlin, Conn., Diana (Dreher) Sziabowski (Justin) of West Hartford, Conn., Gregory Dreher, Liam Dreher, and Annalise Dreher, all of Cornwall, N.Y. He also leaves his grandchildren, Theodore, Benjamin, Isla, Grace, and Margaret. He was predeceased by his son, David Stauning Dreher.
Jeffrey came from a large family, and his siblings were his best friends. Left to cherish his memory are Rick Dreher (Lisa) of Poultney, Vt., Dan Dreher of Waterbury, Conn., Michael Dreher (Betsy) of Prospect, Conn., Christine (Dreher) Corey (Paul) of West Hartford, Conn., and David Dreher (Donna) of Danvers, Mass. He loved his many nieces and nephews as his own, and he was adored by his many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Visitation was held from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 30th at Quigley-Sullivan Funeral Home, Inc., 337 Hudson St., Cornwall-on-Hudson, N.Y. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, July 1st at St. Thomas of Canterbury Church, 340 Hudson St., Cornwall-on-Hudson, N.Y.
