Lisa Diane DeMartino
August 10, 1958—March 30, 2024
Cornwall, NY
Lisa DeMartino, 65, died from lung cancer at Phelps Hospital in Sleepy Hollow, NY, on March 30. A 42-year resident of Cornwall, she leaves behind sister Michelle Stilson, husband David Noland, daughter Caldonia Noland, golden retriever Shea, and many, many friends who will miss her dearly.
Lisa was born on August 10, 1958 in Troy, NY to Jeanne and Al DeMartino. She and her older sister Michelle (Miki) grew up on Fourth Avenue in Lansingburgh among swarms of Irish and Italian kids. She was a bright, earnest, and determined student, and became the first woman in her large extended family to graduate from college. At Union College in Schenectady, NY, she made lifelong friends, spent a year abroad in England (where she was wrongly arrested from a phone booth) and graduated with a degree in American Studies in 1981. She moved to Cornwall in 1982
In 1987, she attended a Halloween party at a friend’s house, fetchingly costumed as Jane Eyre. From across a bonfire, she caught the eye of David Noland, a writer living in Mountainville. After visiting his rustic cedar cottage in the woods with a wood stove and a red tin roof, she decided this was Her Man. Dave, as yet unaware of her superpower of determination and persistence, believed he was just going to have some dates with a cute brunette.
They married in 1991, in a cedar grove behind the cottage with the red tin roof. It was in this house that they raised their only child Callie, born in 1996. With her home base in Mountainville well established, Lisa traveled extensively, exploring the Caribbean, Europe, and Africa. She also earned a master’s degree in English Literature from SUNY New Paltz.
Lisa loved to work, and sought jobs helping people to better themselves. She worked in adult education at SUNY New Paltz and Bergen Community College, taught English at Mount Saint Mary College and Rockland Community College, and, later, worked for local nonprofits Maternal Infant Services Network and Big Brothers Big Sisters. The job she was most proud of, however, was constituent services representative for U. S. Congressman John Hall (former leader of the band Orleans). Lisa focused on Veterans Affairs, and her characteristic persistence and determination in the face of unimaginable bureaucracy recovered over two million dollars in backlogged benefits for Hudson Valley veterans and their families.
While working to serve her community, she also devoted countless hours to her daughter Callie’s myriad extracurricular activities, driving to and from swim practices and softball tournaments, offering comfort in loss and buoyant pride in victory. Callie and Lisa shared a love of Aaron Sorkin, Jane Austen, coffee, and late-morning lounging in pajamas.
When Callie went off to college, Lisa and Dave became bicoastal, finding a beloved second home for part of each winter in a rented cottage in the California beach town of Carpinteria. There they frequented the beach and local cafes, and Lisa diligently pursued her favored hobby of walking in the sunshine. This is how we ask her many beloved family and friends to remember her– in a cute sun hat on the beach, chin tilted upward, with a spring in her step.
