Geraldine L. Betters, of New Windsor, NY entered into eternal rest on January 24, 2024 at the Kaplan Family Hospice Residence in Newburgh, NY. She was 94 years old.
The daughter of the late Floyd Ling and Effie (Meacham) Ling, Geraldine was born on August 17, 1929 Saranac Lake, NY and grew up in Bloomingdale, NY.
Geraldine graduated from Saranac Lake High School in 1946. She continued her education at SUNY Plattsburgh earning her Bachelor’s Degree in 1950. And later went on to earn her Master’s Degree in Elementary Education in 1962 at SUNY Potsdam.
Geraldine was a retired Elementary School Teacher having taught in Bloomingdale and Tupper Lake, NY before her family relocated to the Hudson Valley in 1965 and later retiring from the Newburgh Enlarged School District at the New Windsor Elementary School. After retiring in 1985, she became the Director of St. John’s Nursery School in Cornwall, NY for several years. She was a gifted and dedicated first and second grade teacher who benefitted countless students throughout her career.
Geraldine was a member of a variety of organizations and a long-time member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Cornwall, NY. She enjoyed cooking and socializing with family and friends, especially playing cards. “Mom was a loving and doting presence to friends and family alike. She had a calm steady demeanor and could always be relied on whatever the situation”. She will be missed greatly.
Geraldine was preceded in death by her beloved husband: Stewart James Betters. She is survived by her loving sons: Roger Betters and his wife Marilyn of Hurleyville, NY, Russell Betters and his wife Debra of Tupper Lake and Kingston, NY and David Betters of New Windsor, NY; grandchildren Jeffrey (Lauren Foster and great-grandchild Hazel Mae) Betters and Stefan (Kristy) Betters.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of the Kaplan Family Hospice Residence for their diligent and compassionate care of mom during her final days.
Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 28th at Quigley-Sullivan Funeral Home, Inc., 337 Hudson Street, Cornwall-On-Hudson, NY. A Funeral Service will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Monday, January 29th at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 66 Clinton Street, Cornwall, NY. Interment will follow the Service at Willow Dell Cemetery in Cornwall-On-Hudson, NY.
