Stephen George Fisher

December 1, 1935—October 19, 2023

Mountainville, NY

Stephen George Fisher of Mountainville, NY died peacefully on October 19, 2023 at Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital in Newburgh, NY. He was 87 years old and will be missed greatly by his family and many friends.

The son of the late Oscar Fisher and Nora (Braslowsky) Fisher, Mr. Fisher was born on December 1, 1935 in New York, NY – a city for which he had a lifelong love. He grew up in Locust Valley, NY and graduated from Friends Academy there. He studied at the University of Pennsylvania and Imperial College in London and served in the US Navy.

Mr. Fisher had a long and successful business career, primarily focused on imaging and management of medical records. Ultimately, he was the founder of a medical records company, Medrex, Ltd. and an archival imaging company, Hudson Microimaging, Inc., both in Port Ewen, NY.

He was an active member of Church of the Messiah in Rhinebeck and served as a chaplain for Vassar Brothers Hospital for several years. As a member of Hospice, he provided solace to many families.

Mr. Fisher was an avid reader, writer, gardener, gentleman farmer, and loved classical music and the natural world. He assisted in starting the Rhinebeck Theater Society and the Rhinebeck Community Garden. He travelled the world and brought a love of exploration to his entire family. Facile with languages, and bilingual in English and Spanish he walked large sections of El Camino in Spain.

Mr. Fisher never failed to connect with anyone he encountered, equally comfortable with a taxi driver as with a governor. A consummate raconteur, he frequently drew content from his own long and varied life – which began in the depths of the Great Depression and ended in the early days of artificial intelligence. He also inherited a lifelong habit of afternoon naps from his mother, and in later years even had his own designated nap hat. It was for these mundane pleasures that he expressed profound appreciation, which he would often weave into Proustian vignettes for anyone lucky enough to be with him. He was continually awestruck and fascinated by the existence and beauty of life, especially his family. He cared deeply about those around him and was immeasurably proud of his children and grandchildren.

Mr. Fisher is survived by his loving wife, Toya Lafin; his daughters, Toya (Fisher) Dubin and her husband Andrew of Mountainville, NY and Jennifer Fisher of Mountainville, NY; his sons, Ian Fisher and his wife Taelor of Kenilworth, IL and Gareth Fisher and his wife Maura of Brentwood, CA; 10 grandchildren; his sisters, Alice Fisher and Susan (Fisher) Curtis. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife Deirdre (Kapsa) Fisher and his brother, Christopher Fisher.

Visitation was held from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 24 at Quigley-Sullivan Funeral Home, Inc., 337 Hudson Street, Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY. A graveside service followed the visitation at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Mountainville, NY. A memorial service is planned for Dec. 1 (which would have been his 88th birthday – a day he relished every year) at 4pm at Church of the Messiah in Rhinebeck, with supper to follow.

Memorial Contributions in Mr. Fisher’s name may be made to The Nature Conservancy, Attn: Treasury, 4245 N. Fairfax Drive, Suite 100, Arlington, VA 22203.
