Matthew Christopher Fuger

December 31, 1981 – August 30, 2023

Cornwall, NY

Matthew C. Fuger passed away on August 30, 2023 in Cornwall NY.  He was 41 years old and was born in Rantoul Illinois. After spending several years moving around the world with his family, they settled in Lakeridge Virginia. Just before high school began, his family moved to New York where he attended Cornwall High School.  After high school he graduated from Divers Academy International as an underwater welder. He worked for numerous companies offshore and inland.  This was truly a perfect career for him and fulfilled his joy of living on the edge.  He recently began his longtime wish of playing the guitar and would happily serenade anyone. It’s hard to believe that we never knew he had such a great voice! Anyone who heard him could tell how much passion he felt for his music.

Matt leaves behind his parents: Bill and Janice Fuger; his sister: Jennifer Lavin; his only and most beloved son: Tyler James Fuger; and his great-grandmother: Mary Joan Fuger. He is also survived by Tyler’s mother: Danielle Fuger; and last bust certainly not least his most-loved soul mate and best friend for many years: Sara Olley and her two sons: Nicholas and Alex. He has many aunts, uncles and cousins that will all miss him.

Matt is predeceased by his grandfathers: William Fuger and James Mahler; and his grandmother: Jane Mahler.

Some of Matt’s greatest memories with our whole family were down at Seaside, New Jersey every summer.  No one other than his son Tyler loved it more. We will be forever grateful to the Coughlin Family for being so generous and giving us these special times that we will cherish even more.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Catholic Charities, Office of Development, 11th Floor, 1011 First Avenue, New York, NY 10022 to help them assist others recovering from addiction. It would mean a great deal to us if we could help another family so they don’t have to suffer the same pain.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 10th at Quigley-Sullivan Funeral Home, Inc., 337 Hudson Street Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, September 11th at St. Thomas of Canterbury Church, 340 Hudson Street, Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY.

Florence Ann Spielman Maternowski

February 5, 1942—August 26, 2023

Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY

Florence Ann Spielman Maternowski, who was born in Liberty, New York on Feb 5, 1942 to the late Otto George Spielman and Florence Alice Cross Spielman passed away on August 26, 2023 at the age of 81 years.

Florence grew up with her only sibling, Nancy, in Cornwall on Hudson, New York. As a young girl, she and her sister loved visiting the library and bringing home all the books they were allowed. She graduated from Cornwall Central High School before entering the workforce in the furniture business. After marriage, she then lived in Florida briefly before relocating in the 70’s due to a hurricane. She went  to Texas which reunited her with her sister. Florence started a new life in Lake Dallas, Texas then moved to Blue Ridge, Texas. It is there that she met a neighbor and fell in love with Joe Maternowski in 2004. The couple were introduced to each other by their puppies who loved to play outside together. They were the best of friends, even choosing to work together at a corner store just to spend time together. Joe and Florence would be married in Collin County, Texas in 2012. Florence was a wonderful homemaker and enjoyed providing for her husband. In return, Joe tried to give her all that she had ever wanted; especially a brick home that they could call their own. The couple then moved to Princeton with that dream fulfilled.

Florence was always found with a crochet needle in hand. She was a talented craftswoman! She would sell her beautiful goods such as hats, scarves, blankets, bedspreads, kitchen hand towels, and more at trade shows and would even win prizes for her artistry. She also enjoyed knitting newborn baby caps and donated them to local hospitals. She had a passion for reading which was the only time she might put away her yarn. Other hobbies included various crafts, crossword puzzles, and adult coloring books. Florence had a love for animals, notably her pet parrot named Joey who was a vocal companion for at least a decade. She also had a special place in her heart for dogs and always had one in her home to love on. Florence made friends later in her life playing bingo and socializing at dinner time.

Florence was a loving and caring person, Christian by faith, enjoyed the classics of country music and gospel, Wheel of Fortune, and time spent with her husband most of all.

Left to remember her beautiful life include her husband, Joe, her sister, Nancy Kauffman, sister in law, Cheryl Hill, her nephews, John Mumme and Bryan Mumme, her niece, Denise Hoagland, her great nieces and nephews, Amanda Roman Clement, Victoria Ward, Tara Boester, Haley Mumme, Jacob Briggs, and Joshua Otto Mumme, as well as extended family and dear friends.

A private family visitation took place on August 27, 2023 with immediate family surrounding her to share in memories. A future celebration of Florence’s life will be held with family soon.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donation in memory of Florence to the Alzheimer’s Association.

“The greatest of all is Love.”
