The son of the late William J. Engle, Sr. and Shirley Marie (Vander Fehr) Engle, William was born on February 21, 1946 in West Point, NY.
William was a retired Lieutenant with the City of Newburgh Police Department.
William honorably and proudly served his country as a member of the active-duty U.S. Army from 1967 to 1972. His service included two back-to-back combat tours in Vietnam.
William, or “Bill”, as he was known by many, grew up in Highland Falls, NY. He was a graduate of Saint Patrick High School in Newburgh NY and Siena College in Albany, New York, receiving a Bachelors of Arts in history. Like his father before him, he lived a life committed to service to his community and to his country.
His commitment to his country led him and his best friends, Ray Gruno and Stockton Mulvaney, to join the Army together at the height of the Vietnam War. Bill was commissioned as an Army officer and served as a Scout Platoon Leader and as a Tank Commander. While serving in Vietnam he was awarded the Combat Infantryman’s Badge as a Scout Platoon Leader; the Bronze Star with “V” device for personally assaulting an enemy position and exposing himself to hostile fire while providing medical assistance to his wounded soldiers, in the Cu-Chi Rural District; the Soldier’s Medal, for extinguishing a fire in an ammunition laden armored personnel carrier, saving fellow soldiers’ lives; and the Army Commendation Medal. He left active duty and joined the Army Reserves, retiring with the rank of Major.
After leaving active duty, his service to the community continued when he joined the City of Newburgh Police Department. While again serving, he performed the duties of patrolman, Sergeant, Detective Sergeant, Lieutenant, and Detective Lieutenant. He also worked with the Youth Division, Detective Division, and the Neighborhood Police Unit. He retired after 33 years of service to the city.
Bill was a loving husband, father, brother, and loyal friend. He always placed an emphasis on being a good person and endeavored to instill this quality in his family. Bill had a great sense of right and wrong, and how all people should be treated. He will be missed greatly. He hated fishing.

Regina M. (Bigg) Mariotti
January 5, 1950—October 22, 2021
New Windsor, NY
Regina M. (Bigg) Mariotti, of Cornwall, NY entered into eternal rest on October 22, 2021 at 71 years old.
The firstborn child of the late Michael L. Bigg, Sr. and JoAnn J. (Dopico) Bigg, Regina was born on January 5, 1950 in Cornwall, NY.
After graduating from Thevenet Hall Academy, Regina was the first in her family to graduate college, receiving her Bachelor’s Degree from Mount Saint Mary’s College and her Master’s Degree from SUNY New Paltz. As the oldest of six children, Regina was a natural caretaker with a passion for teaching. She began her teaching career at Cornwall-on-Hudson Elementary School and finished at St. Martin De Porres in Poughkeepsie. However, it was her 36 years as the kindergarten teacher at her beloved St. Thomas of Canterbury School in Cornwall-on-Hudson that made her heart beat and gave her life purpose.
In a world where it is all too rare, Regina’s unique combination of deep compassion, sharp wit, fierce loyalty, and unending selflessness made her the best teacher, big sister, and aunt. Though she has a deep love for all of her former students, her first students – her five siblings—were her favorite.
As her family mourns the tremendous loss of their fearless leader, they are comforted in knowing how many mountains she moved, minds she molded, and lives she impacted in and out of her bright yellow classroom.
Regina is survived by her loving and forever appreciative siblings: Michael Jr (Michele), John (Diane), Jomarie Rivers, Steven Bigg (Candace), Lauren Solner (Steven), beloved nieces and nephews: Michelle, Michael, Mickey, Tyler, Sherridan and Cassidy Bigg, Jennifer and Jonathan Rivers, and Ryan and Allison Biasotti; and cousin Joe Big.
Regina was predeceased by her parents and two brothers-in-law: John Cito Jr. and John Rivers.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 30th at St. Thomas of Canterbury Church, 340 Hudson Street, Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY.
As an avid reader with an insatiable appetite to learn and teach, in lieu of flowers, we ask you send donations in her memory to one of her favorite places, The Cornwall Public Library. Please send donations to “Friends of Cornwall Library”, PO Box 396, Cornwall, NY 12518.
