Sup’t reports non-specific school threats

Boosts security at Cornwall Central High School

On Thursday, Dec. 9, Superintendent Terry Dade sent the following message to school families in Cornwall. “We have received several emails and calls from parents regarding a disturbing post on various social media platforms.  This post threatens violence in ‘the school’ but does not name a specific school or district.”

Mr. Dade said that local law enforcement had been contacted and had deemed the threat to be non-credible. “But every school threat is taken seriously and will always be investigated by the appropriate authorities. As a precautionary measure, local officers and building security have been instructed to be extra vigilant and to increase patrols of school buildings.”

A day later, the superintendent contacted school families again.

“We have been made aware of two additional school violence threats on social media,” he told them. “One post mentions ‘the high school’ but does not designate that it is our school, or any school in our district, county or state.  This post is also nearly identical to the post that I referenced in my message to the community yesterday.  The second post is actually a few months old and is addressed in the following news article: www.hudsonvalleypost.com/shooting-threats-made-towards-schools-in-hudson-valley-new-york/.

“All of that said, local law enforcement has been contacted and they investigate every threat thoroughly.  Out of an abundance of caution, Chief Todd Hazard will send an officer to CCHS this morning [Dec. 9] and he will check in personally with the school admin team.”

In addition to the support from the Town of Cornwall Police, each Cornwall school has an armed officer from the Sheriff’s Department stationed near the door.
