Obituary – December 3, 2021

Mary Elizabeth Doupona

May 23, 1927—November 17, 2021

New Windsor, NY

Mary Elizabeth Hoffman Doupona entered into rest on November 17, 2021. Mary, our beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother was 94. The daughter of the late Julius and Martha Hoffman, Mary was born in New Windsor, New York where she lived all her life.

Mary attended Saint Patrick’s School in Newburgh and Newburgh Free Academy. She dropped out of high school with months to go but later earned her GED. After making sure her own children received great educations, she went on to graduate from Marist College as a certified Paralegal and complete a Bachelor of Science degree from Empire State College at age 65.

Throughout Mary’s life she pursued many interests. She was a Telephone Operator for New York Telephone Company, co-owner of La Stop Restaurant in Newburgh, and a Legal Secretary and Paralegal for local attorneys. None of these interests were as important to her as her role as a wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. The moments she spent with her family were treasured by all of us. Her deep faith, her loyalty to those she cared for, her love of learning, her compassion for the underdog, and her dedication to democratic and Christian principles have influenced all of us. Each of us holds a special memory of the time we’ve spent with her and we will miss her greatly.

Mary was predeceased by her husband of 48 years, Joseph, her parents Julius and Martha, her beloved son Frank, her brothers James and Frank Hoffman, and her sisters Helen Hammond, Virginia Poser, Elizabeth Milich, and Catherine Lester. She is survived by her loving daughter Nancy Maguire and her husband Terry Maguire, her sister Joan Polkowski, her daughter in law and dear friend Bernadette Doupona, the grandchildren she adored: Frank Jr, Todd (Jennifer), Lauren Eichner (Dave), Charles Maguire (Leah), Brian Maguire (Cierra), Katie Bryce (Jon) and the great grandchildren she cherished: Molly, Finn, Hudson, Marley, Charlie, Bodhi, Conor and Keegan. She leaves behind many nephews and nieces as well, especially John Hoffman. The love she showed each of us was returned many times over. Mary knew she was loved up to the moment of her passing.

The family would like to express gratitude for the kindness and care provided to Mary during the last weeks of her life by Nato Kilasonia (Natali) and Dr. Jill Hoffman.
