Traditional meal draws about 150 guests
After a year’s pause due to COVID, the Knights of Columbus resurrected their free Thanksgiving Dinner for Senior Citizens. It was held at the former St. Thomas School on Saturday afternoon, Nov. 20.
Steve Accilli and Deacon Tony served as hosts, taking turns at the microphone as the guests helped themselves to a full-course meal.
The Knights cover a part of the expense by publishing a journal with ads from local businesses.
Because of the unusual year, it was hard for some business owners to participate. But there were still a good number of sponsors.
It was hard to order for the meal, because there was no way of knowing how many people would show up. The final head count was about 150. It was a good turnout, although there were fewer people than in previous years.
There was still food left over after people were invited to come back for seconds. Guests were sent home with packages for the weekend, and the balance of the food was donated to the Newburgh Ministries.
The time passed quickly. The doors opened at noon and the cleanup was finished at 2:30. It was a lot of work, but the volunteers weren’t complaining. “This is a great community,” Steve Accilli remarked a few days after the feast was over.
