Alma E. Filzen  

1930—2021

Alma Filzen of Manchester NJ passed away peacefully on Tuesday June 15, 2021, at her home surrounded by the love of her family and friends. Alma was 90 years old, born in the Bronx, New York, the only child of the late Robert and Alma Page.

She graduated from Walton H.S. in the Bronx and attended college at Concordia River Forest in Illinois. It was there that Alma met and married Richard Showers the father of her six children. She briefly taught in Hickory N.C.

Alma returned to her “home” in the Bronx where she raised her family and made lifelong friends. It was where she lost her husband to cancer in 1967. It was also where she met and married her beloved Joseph Filzen. In 1974 the family moved to Salisbury Mills NY where Alma worked in the Cornwall Central H.S. Library. In 2004 they moved to Manchester NJ. Alma loved reading, baking, sewing and helping others. She enjoyed vacationing in Sandbridge Beach VA and the Outer Banks in NC every year with her family, especially her grandchildren. Most of all, she loved her family. Alma cherished her husband Joe and her close bond with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Alma was a devout Christian (Lutheran). She was active in her church and prayer groups. She loved the Lord.

Alma is predeceased by her husband Joseph Filzen in 2019. She is survived by her six children.

Ruth Hnath and her husband Steve, Lois Kamprath and her partner Bernadette, Paul Filzen and his wife Alicia, Jane Carroll and her husband Chris, John Filzen and his wife Connie, James Filzen and his wife Susan, 13 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren.

Alma’s life celebration will include a visitation on Monday June 28, 2021 from 2pm to 4pm and 7pm to 9pm at the Anderson & Campbell Funeral Home, 3010 Ridgeway Rd, Manchester Township, NJ 08759. There will be a Church service on Tuesday June 29, 2021, 11 am at the Redeemer Lutheran Church, 2309 NJ-70 East, Manchester Township, NJ  08759.  Alma will be laid to rest at the Brig. General William C. Doyle Veteran Cemetery in Wrightstown, NJ immediately following the Church service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice and St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.

William G. Stratis

May 25, 1926—May 30, 2021

Cornwall, NY

William G. Stratis passed away on May 30, 2021. He was born on May 25, 1926 in Newburgh, NY. He grew up in Newburgh, and graduated from Newburgh Free Academy in 1944. Shortly after graduation, Bill entered military service, where he saw combat in Europe. He was captured and taken prisoner while in Germany. During his service, he was wounded twice, and was awarded the Purple Heart. He was also awarded the Bronze Star and the Combat Infantry Badge. Before his discharge, he attained the rank of Sergeant. 

After his service, Bill attended Rider College, and graduated with a B.S. in Business Administration. He then worked for Chester Cable, and after that, for IBM for 34 years. Once he retired, he became a financial planner, and devoted himself to the service of other veterans. Volunteering at the VA Hospital at Castle Point, Bill studied to become a Certified National Service Officer. Every year, more than 4 million dollars goes to the families that he assisted at Castle Point. 

Bill is survived by his wife of sixty-four years: Joyce; his four daughters: Heidi Kane, Leslie Baum, Wendy LaFratta, and Stacey Fowler; his seven grandchildren: Devin, Desiree, Caitilin, Andrew, Rebecca, Taylor and Jessica; and three great-grandchildren: Daniel, Olive and Willa. 

Due to the public health concerns of the Corona Virus (Covid-19), graveside service will be private.  A Memorial Service for Bill will be held at a later date.  Please refer to www.Quigleybros.com, for further information.  On behalf of the family, thank you for your understanding and support during this difficult time.
