Cornwall store is Farm-to-Table nominee

The Instagram arrived on Monday with a pair of surprises. The good news was that the Farmhouse Market was a finalist in Hudson Valley Magazine’s Farm-to-Table Category.

The store on Cornwall’s Main Street was nominated often enough to make the “final five” – an impressive accomplishment for a business that’s been open for less than six months.

The other surprise was the timetable. The voting was due to end on the following Monday morning, April 5. That didn’t give Anthony and Rosey Lanci much time to recruit support. But they’ve been on the fast track since they opened their doors.

Mr. Lanci summarized a part of the store’s appeal.

“We cater to the outdoor crew,” he told me. “If you’re going hiking, kayaking or picnicking, you can let us know and we’ll pack a lunch for you. If the transaction is on line, you can just grab your bag and you’re outdoors.”

Lunch can be a customized picnic basket that’s packed with fruit and some of the store’s specialties.

Farmhouse is known for its locally produced cheeses and its charcuterie meats. The term was new to me.

But I learned that “charcuterie” describes meats that have been dried or cured.

The owners said that the meats have been selling even quicker than they expected. In addition to the Instagram, there have been several positive surprises.

“We’re definitely busier than we thought,” Mr. Lanci admitted. “We expected more gradual growth, but we were accepted very quickly. We didn’t know what to expect in a pandemic.”

The business, which includes craft beer and cider, still attracts first-time customers and people who say, “We didn’t know you were here.” But the owners have also developed a solid following.

During the winter, they were closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. That will change on the day the voting is over. Mrs. Lanci informed me that, starting on April 5, the store will be open every day at 9 a.m.

“We like to help other small businesses,” she added, which explains why you can purchase homemade greeting cards, locally assembled cocktail kits, and an assortment of microgreens (which are a tasty addition to sandwiches and salads).

If you want to help the couple in their current quest, you can visit HVmag.com and look for the “best of the Hudson Valley.” The owners would appreciate your support.
