John H. Smith Sr.

John H. Smith Sr. of Cornwall-on-Hudson entered into rest Monday, March 15, 2021. He was 87.

The son of the late William A. and Ada (Cook) Smith, John was born August 26, 1933 in Newburgh.

John was president of William A. Smith & Son Insurance in Newburgh. He was a graduate and past trustee of NYMA, University of Pennsylvania Wharton School of Finance, past treasurer of McQuade Foundation, past president of Newburgh Rotary Club, past president and chairman of Community Chest, past board member of Cornwall Hospital Board and St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital, Chairman of St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital Foundation, member of Orange County Insurance Agents Association, Newburgh Jaycees, and Union Presbyterian Church. In 2010 John received the pillar of the Community Lifetime Achievement Award. John was a St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital Community Commitment honoree in 2015.

John was a beloved husband, Dad, Grandpa and Great Grandpa. In addition to his family who cherished him, he was loved by a wide circle of friends, employees and colleagues. He was the type of man that made people stop and remark about his kindness. So many lives were touched by his presence and he will be missed dearly.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth (Cronk) Smith at home, children, Debra Lynn Johnson (Ramond) of the Town of Newburgh, Cathy Smith McCarty (Timothy) of Cornwall, John “Jack” H. Smith Jr. (Katherine) of Poughkeepsie, beloved grandchildren: John H. Smith III, Julia Smith, Victoria Johnson, Steven Johnson (Kristell), Austin McCarty (Christina) and Connor McCarty; great grandchildren: Keegan and McKenna McCarty. John was predeceased by his brother, William H. Smith.

Visitation will take place Saturday, March 20, 2021 from 1 pm to 4 pm at White, Venuto and Morrill Funeral and Cremation Service, 188 North Plank Rd, Town of Newburgh.

Due to the continued public health concerns, please know that there is an occupancy limitation which may cause a wait time, please be respectful of your time visiting. Facial covering must be worn in the funeral home at all times, and social distancing must be practiced.

Graveside funeral service will take place 1 pm, Sunday, March 21st at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Rt 9W North, Newburgh.
