The Wood Cemetery was opened in the 19th century and is now surrounded by forest. The graveyard is the final resting place for three Civil War veterans.
In recent years, Brigid Flynn has assumed responsibility for the cemetery’s upkeep. But she needs help, which is why she wrote the following letter:
Dec. 8: This past weekend I visited the Wood Cemetery off Mountain Road in Cornwall-on-Hudson. To say the least, I was not very happy coming home after witnessing the condition of the cemetery due to the current storms.
There was so much damage, too much actually, and a lot to take in, when dealing with the COVID pandemic, the necessity of wearing a face mask, and being 83 years old.
In the recent past, I asked for help to clean up Wood Cemetery. Sadly, I have run into a dead end.
Wood Cemetery, where many of our veterans are buried, should not be abandoned. One young man, Dylan Mannion, has promised to help. However, he CANNOT do it alone. Now, I am asking for others to help him clear away trees and brush so we can let the veterans know we haven’t forgotten them.
I am also asking people to donate wreaths to be placed on the graves. It is the very least we can do to remember these young men and women who sacrificed their lives so that we may live in a land of freedom. In return, we3 can certainly maintain their resting place in a presentable and pleasing condition.
Please contact Brigid Flynn at 845-534-2116 if you feel as I do and you are able to help in any way.
