Farmhouse Market ribbon-cutting ceremony is Saturday

Minutes before the Sept. 25 soft opening of Farmhouse Market, located at 277 Main St., patrons were already eager to check out the new business’ selection. The grand opening is scheduled for Oct. 3 and will kick off with a 10 a.m. ribbon-cutting ceremony.

“My husband is a career chef and he opened up his own restaurant consulting business in New York City,” said co-owner Rosemarie “Rosey” Ott. “We always played around with the idea of opening a market and slowing things down a little bit. When COVID happened it made the decision easier for us to start on that path rather than wait a few years.”

When Ott and Anthony Lanci made the decision to move from Brooklyn to the Hudson Valley, they informed longtime friends Brittany and Anthony Devito of their intention to open up a market. At first they joked about having the Devitos join them in the business venture, but the couple was eager to jump right in.

Once the two couples agreed to move forward, they began developing a concept and what they wanted to offer the community.

“What I really wanted to offer was good quality local products,” Lanci said. “With COVID, that made it more important to me to keep local farms and businesses working. I just really wanted to showcase what we have in the Hudson Valley. There are other places in the country which are known for their food, but the Hudson Valley is really coming around.”

Farmhouse Market offers fresh fruits and vegetables, beef from Sir Angus Farms, pork from Sugar Hill, additional meats from Larchmont Charcuterie, cheeses from 5 Spoke Cheese, bread from Newburgh Flour, Hudson Valley pressed sunflower oil, and a selection of beer and cider from a multitude of places including Newburgh Brewery.

The market has a limited inventory which is rotated often to keep items fresh.

Farmhouse Market also specializes and focuses on sandwiches and charcuterie boards. The fledgling business is working with a local company to create its own picnic baskets and cooler bags.

“Our concept is to have people who are either coming up from the city going to Storm King Art Center, or local people going out for a walk, they can come and either rent a cooler bag or buy it and we have different specials with sandwiches and salad with the cooler bag or vacuumed packed charcuterie board,” said Ott.

As avid hikers, Ott and Lanci thought the concept would be convenient to others. The sandwiches and salads are named after popular hiking spots in the Hudson Valley such as Storm King, North Point, Gertrude’s Nose, and Bear Mountain.

Once the quartet had a business plan, they needed a location. Ott and Lanci thought Cornwall would be a perfect location because it has so much to offer between hiking trails and the art center. At first they were attracted to a building down the block, which led them to their landlord who showed them the space at 277 Main St. They fell in love with the storefront, large windows, and adjacent parking lot.

The market’s hours will be Wednesday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. The website, thefarmhouseny.com, offers the purchase of any store item online.

Curbside pickup is available.
