Location changes after 15 years

Butterhill Day School has graced Cornwall’s Main Street with its red facade, but after 15 years it will be moving to a new location. The day school has moved to Cornwall-on-Hudson and will occupy the space once used by St. Thomas of Canterbury School.

“I think it’s a good move,” said owner Helen Bunt. “I’m excited about it. We can do a lot of things we couldn’t do here and give the kids more programs. The kids are going to benefit immensely from the move.”

Bunt said she’s optimistic about the opportunities the new space will present. Butterhill will occupy eight classrooms and a gymnasium which includes a stage for performances. A nurse’s station will allow the school to hire a nurse. There’s a kitchen and Bunt is hoping to conduct cooking classes, with permission from the church. She’s also looking into hiring a security guard.

The school, which hosts children six months to 12-years-old, will be able to offer a science lab, sensory area, a woodworking area, and technology with smart boards, tablets, and computers. While kids will be separated by age groups, they’ll move through the classrooms to take advantage of the enrichment programs.

On top of the yoga, science, art, and music programs the school offers, Bunt plans to add parent/grandparent socials, interactive activities for parents, and large motor skill activities in the gymnasium and expanded open playground. Over the last week, a crew has been disassembling the playground and assembling it at the new location. Bunt said space is available to expand the playground. The half-acre of property will allow the kids to run around and play games like soccer.

Bunt is still waiting for a license, from the state, for the new location, but anticipates opening July 13. In the meantime, the school is open for tours.
