Cornwall work goes on despite pandemic
The NYS Department of Transportation project to replace the Willow Avenue bridge, in Cornwall, is underway and scheduled to be completed this summer. Removal of the old bridge, which dated back to the 1930s when Route 9W was constructed, was completed a couple weeks ago.
Unlike some construction projects which have halted to prevent the spread of COVID-19, others have been deemed essential.
“In keeping with Governor [Andrew] Cuomo’s directive to combat the spread of COVID-19, non-essential NYSDOT employees are working from home until further notice or in support of COVID-19 response activities,” said DOT public information officer Heather Pillsworth. “All highway maintenance and active construction projects will continue as planned.”
Workers are directed to practice social distancing on jobs and supervisors are asked to use the minimal amount of workers on crews as practical, while also observing safe work-zone practices. It’s recommended crews be transported to work zones using more vehicles than normal, to practice social distancing within the vehicle.
Once completed, the new Willow Avenue bridge will have sidewalks on both sides and will maintain the same width as the old one.
Prior to the removal of the old bridge, crewmen were observed to be removing trees and modifying the landscape on either side of Rt. 9W. Pillsworth said the project includes the planting of grass and wildflower seeds.
Following the completion of the bridge this summer, the DOT will begin work on replacing the Quaker Avenue bridge.
Reconstruction will entail working on one side of the bridge while maintaining two-way traffic on the other half. That project will be completed sometime next year.
Also in 2021, the Angola Road bridge will be removed and completely reconstructed.
