The Town of Cornwall Recreation Department has a number of trips and activities planned for the year, and some ideas that are still in the early development stages. Trips are open to all ages.

On Tuesday, a group of travelers celebrated Mardi Gras on Staten Island. The next trip is scheduled for March 13 to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day at the Brownstone. in Paterson, N.J. Sign up on or before March 2.

Assistant recreation director Phylis Murphy said she’s still planning two casino trips in April. At least one casino visit is organized each month.

A few trips are planned to see plays. On May 12, visit Matamoras, Penn. to see “Days of Yesteryear” at the Riverview Inn. On June 17, see the comedy, “Something Rotten” at the Forestburgh Playhouse and “The Jersey Tenors” on Oct. 20 at the Hunterdon Hills Playhouse. All trips include transportation and sit-down lunch.

In May, spend two nights and three days in Burlington and Shelburne, Vt.

Climb aboard the Spirit Cruise, in July, and sail around Manhattan. Enjoy dancing and lunch on the boat.

Murphy said she’s still making plans for an August trip.  In the fall, there will be a historical walk organized in conjunction with the Cornwall Historical Society.

One idea Murphy is considering is a visit to Medieval Times. Looking ahead to next year, vacation in San Salvador at the end of April.

Cornwall once had a welcome wagon to introduce new residents to the community. Murphy is working with the Chamber of Commerce in the hope of bringing it back. Her ideas include offering new residents a coupon book to the community shops, as well as a copy of The Cornwall Local. The Recreation Department will be able to provide information on its activities.

Murphy said summer camp registration will begin soon, but in the meantime, spring is right around the corner.

Pending board approval, starting in April, the Recreation Department will offer a program, in conjunction with Tinkergarten Parks and Greenspaces, to children six months to eight-years-old. Classes will be held once a week for one hour outside. Weekly activities are nature-based and will focus on building social, emotional, and thinking skills. This is a 10-week program.

Instructional tennis also begins in April and is open to kids ages four through sixth grade.

Belly dancing, for folks of all ages, has been extended for six weeks starting March 3. Sessions are held at Munger Cottage.

The farmers’ market is scheduled to open May 13 and will be open Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Murphy said she is seeking approval to expand the hours to 7 p.m. once a month, twice if there’s a demand. This year’s market will feature fresh fruits and vegetables, pickles, farm fresh meats and eggs, goat cheese, maple syrup, honey,  and a variety of desserts. Caribbean Mango will return with jerk chicken and other food. Murphy said there will also be a few surprises. There will be music and storytime courtesy of the library.
