John M. Franklin

July 14, 1939-August 27, 2019

Campbell Hall

Beloved son, brother and uncle, John M. Franklin of Campbell Hall (formerly of the Bronx and Middletown) entered into eternal rest on Aug. 27. He was 80 years old.

The son of the late Anthony V. Franklin and Margaret (Henry) Franklin, John was born on July 14, 1939 in the Bronx.

John attended St. Peter & Paul grade school and Cardinal Hayes High School in the Bronx. He was a retired fire marshall with the FDNY in New York City.

John is survived by his sister-in-law: Theresa P. Franklin of Cornwall, his nieces and their husbands: Margaret (Franklin) and Jim Gawryszewski and Patricia (Franklin) and Tim Heinze; his grand-nieces: Maeve, Mairead and Clare and his grand-nephews: Rowan and Liam. In addition to his parents, John was predeceased by his brother Vincent L. Franklin and his niece Alannah Franklin.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday, Aug. 31 at the Queen of Peace Chapel in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 10 West Stevens Avenue, Hawthorne. Interment followed the Mass in the cemetery.

William J. Larkin Jr.

February 5, 1928-August 31, 2019

Cornwall-on-Hudson

The State of New York lost one of its treasures with the death of State Senator William J. Larkin, Jr., a longtime area resident, who died peacefully at home surrounded by family on Aug. 31. He was 91 years of age and had served his country and community for 75 years.

His survivors include his wife, Patricia Kurucz McGuirk Larkin, and children, Janet Stivers (Dan), William Larkin (Nancy) and Patricia Winters (Jim) , J.P. McGuirk, Mary McGuirk, Jennifer McGuirk, Patricia Rivers and Anne (Gene) Duignan. Additionally, he is survived by 17 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren, who brought great happiness to his life.

Visitation was held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 4 at the Newburgh Armory Unity Center in the William and Pat Larkin Education Center, 321 S. William Street, Newburgh, under the direction of Quigley-Sullivan Funeral Home of Cornwall-on-Hudson. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 5 at St. Thomas of Canterbury, 340 Hudson Street, Cornwall-on-Hudson.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Newburgh Armory Unity Center, Hospice of Orange and Sullivan Counties or Nora Cronin Presentation Academy.

Alice B. Parry

February 19, 1923 – August 27, 2019

Highland Falls

Alice B. Parry, 96, a lifelong resident of Highland Falls, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 27 at The Valley View Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Goshen.

The daughter of the late Joseph C. Burrow and Etta B. Weyant Burrow, she was born Feb. 19, 1923 in Central Valley. Alice served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. After settling in Highland Falls with her husband, Alice became an active member of the Hudson Highlands United Methodist Church; and the United Methodist Women. She was a Sunday school teacher and oversaw the church newsletter for many years.

Alice was instrumental in starting the “Get Set” program in Highland Falls and was an original organizer along with her husband Henry in forming the first AHRC (Association for Help of Retarded Children) in Orange County. In her spare time, Alice loved to crochet and read, and do the NY Times Crossword puzzle, in pen.

Survivors include her son Richard D. Parry and wife Marcia of Highland Falls; her daughter Martha Fredette of Lyndeborough, N.H.; her seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren – Richard Parry Jr. of Marina Del Ray, Calif. and son Riley, Elizabeth Parry of Highland Falls, Rachel Patterson, husband Aaron and their son Connor of Highland Falls, Sarah Leo of Daleville, Ala., Abigail Leo of Middletown, Mary Fredette of Boston, Grace Fredette of Lyndeborough; and son-in-law James B. Leo of Highland Falls.

She is pre-deceased by her husband Henry G. Parry Jr., and their daughters Regina Parry and Leslie Leo.

A memorial service took place at Hudson Highland United Methodist Church on Sept. 4. Memorial contri-butions may be made to Hudson Highlands United Methodist Church, (PO Box 32, Highland Falls, NY 10928) or the Highland Falls Library (298 Main St., Highland Falls, NY 10298).
